We are recruiting on behalf of our client for an experienced Payroll Senior to join a busy and supportive payroll team based in Ipswich. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to take ownership of a portfolio of clients while playing a key role in supporting colleagues, maintaining high service standards and ensuring payrolls are delivered accurately and on time.
Working within a collaborative environment, you'll manage the full payroll cycle for a varied client base, provide guidance to junior team members, and act as a trusted point of contact for payroll queries. This role would suit an experienced payroll professional who enjoys building client relationships, mentoring others and keeping up to date with payroll legislation in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities- Manage a portfolio of client payrolls from start to finish, ensuring accuracy and timely delivery.
- Process weekly, fortnightly, four-weekly and monthly payrolls.
- Calculate and process statutory payments including SSP, SMP, SPP and other payroll-related payments.
- Administer workplace pensions, including auto-enrolment and pension submissions.
- Prepare and submit RTI returns while ensuring compliance with HMRC requirements.
- Maintain accurate payroll records and carry out payroll reconciliations and final checks.
- Respond to payroll queries from clients, HMRC and third-party providers in a professional and timely manner.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with clients, providing an excellent level of customer service.
- Review and check payrolls completed by colleagues, helping to maintain accuracy across the team.
- Support and mentor junior payroll team members, sharing knowledge and assisting with day-to-day queries.
- Deliver guidance and training on payroll systems, legislation and best practice where required.
- Identify opportunities to improve payroll processes and support continuous improvement initiatives.
- Produce payroll reports and assist with additional payroll projects as required.
- Keep up to date with changes to payroll legislation and ensure ongoing compliance.
- A CIPP Foundation Degree qualification, or currently working towards one, would be advantageous.
- At least two years' experience processing end-to-end payrolls.
- Strong knowledge of payroll legislation, PAYE, pensions and auto-enrolment.
- Experience managing multiple payrolls within a busy environment.
- The ability to manually calculate payroll when required.
- Excellent attention to detail and a high level of accuracy.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to prioritise competing deadlines.
- Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.
- Previous experience supporting, mentoring or checking the work of colleagues would be advantageous.
- Confidence using payroll software together with Microsoft Excel.
