Job Description:

CONTRACT TYPE: Semester based.

BASIC FUNCTION:

The Department of Philosophy is seeking a Spring 2027 adjunct faculty to teach several sections of PHL 105 Finding Your Moral Compass, an introductory philosophical ethics course required of all Salve Regina students. Courses will be held in-person on our campus in Newport, RI.

PHL 105: Finding Your Moral Compass (3 Credits)

• Fulfills Core Requirement in First Year Foundational Courses

To that end, this course will equip you with the philosophical tools of moral reasoning needed to navigate ethical challenges in pursuit of a life well-lived. We'll explore the question of what constitutes "goodness" and how to make just decisions that help in developing your own virtuous character while fostering harmonious communities grounded in mercy. By delving into core ethical theories like virtue ethics, deontology, utilitarianism, and natural law, you'll gain the ability to critically analyze arguments, formulate well-reasoned positions, and develop your own ethical framework.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Prepare and teach in-person, on-campus classes
• Prepare, proctor and grade examinations
• Grade and return student assignments, examinations, reports, etc. in a timely manner
• Provide a course syllabus at the start of the semester to the department chair (A template will be provided by the department chair.)
• Basic use of the Canvas learning management system to disseminate syllabus, and other course material to students. (Help using this system is available, if needed.)
• Hold weekly office hours
• Use Salve email (i.e., @salve.edu) to send and receive official email correspondence with students, staff, and administrators.

Requirements:

• A minimum of a master's degree in philosophy, along with teaching experience
• In ability to teach in-person classes at the scheduled class times
