Position Purpose

Assist residents with daily routines, domestic duties, and monitor client activities while aligning with the values of hope, service, dignity and stewardship.

Accountabilities

  • Ensure the safety and protection of all residents, clients, and guests within the Harbour Light.
  • Interact with support staff, administration, and the counseling team.
  • Recognize and use building safety alarms, panic buttons, and door security as required.
  • Make and document regular room checks, client counts, and general monitoring.
  • Oversight of the Harbour Light building.
  • Ensure residents attend internal and external meetings.
  • Escort and supervise residents for external activities, events, functions, etc.
  • Support residents/facility throughout the entirety of the shift.
  • Perform other work-related duties as assigned.

Managerial / Technical Leadership Responsibility

Reports directly to Immediate Supervisor. No direct reports for this position. May show others how to perform certain procedures.

Financial and Materials Management

Involved in some financial transactions in accordance with Salvation Army policies. May make small program purchases under the authority of the Immediate Supervisor. No input into the annual budget. Any funds that are handed into the program for a donation or resident/client must be documented in a logbook, sealed in an envelope, signed, and placed in the mailbox on the interior office door.

Working Conditions

Casual position. Work environment primarily in a residential setting. Disagreeable conditions: isolation, dealing with angry or abusive people, verbal abuse, exposure to bodily fluids, drugs and alcohol. Local travel required. Moderate physical exertion; may lift up to 30 pounds. Job requires continuous monitoring of the environment, frequent interaction with clients, attentive listening, and moderate attention when recording information.

Physical Effort / Dexterity and Concentration Required

Must be in good health and physically and mentally able to carry out duties. Must confront clients with the truth while rendering support, enforcing rules with firmness and compassion. Must be well-groomed, maintain high personal hygiene, adhere to dress code. Proficient in spoken and written English. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Support Salvation Army mission and values. Adhere to Code of Ethics and respect Salvation Army spiritual beliefs. Maintain strict confidentiality of client, staff, visitor, volunteer, and centre information. Display positive behaviour towards individuals with substance abuse or mental health challenges.

Exposure to Hazards

Physical attacks by others. Exposure to infectious diseases. Exposure to bodily fluids. Sharp objects. Other potentially dangerous situations.

Precautionary Measures

Universal precautions. Immunization for Hepatitis B. Vaccination against Tuberculosis. Current first aid / CPR certification. Criminal police investigation check. Non-violent crisis intervention training.

Working Hours

12-hour shifts; 7:00 pm to 7:00 am and/or 7:00 am to 7:00 pm inclusive of public holidays.

Education, Qualifications and Certifications

High-school graduate with fair administrative, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills. Alternative education and experience may be considered. Intermediate driver’s licence with community service certification. CPR, First Aid and Non-Violent Crisis Training or willingness to complete once hired. Experience in the social field is an asset. WHMIS training. Willingness to develop understanding and support for Salvation Army mission and purpose. Compliance with OH&S Act and regulations, and adherence to Salvation Army health and safety policies.

Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements

Minimum of three to one year of related experience, including frontline work in a social service setting.

Compensation

Target hiring range: BD$17.13 to BD$20.08, maximum BD$24.10. Placement based on market conditions and candidate experience. Reasonable accommodation available upon request.
