Job Responsibilities
- Support Staff with Activities: Collaborate with support workers to facilitate individual participation in activities. Provide guidance and resources to staff, ensuring they are equipped to support individuals effectively.
- Plan and Implement Person-Centered Activity Programs: Develop and organize activities that are tailored to the interests and abilities of each individual. Continuously assess and adapt programs to meet changing needs and preferences. Ensure all activities are inclusive and accessible to everyone.
- Understand Individual Needs: Gain a deep understanding of everyone’s needs, including their skill development, health, well-being, and personal care requirements. Use this understanding to create meaningful and engaging activities that promote personal growth and enjoyment.
- Maintain Accurate Documentation: Keep all records and documentation related to activities up to date and accurate. Ensure compliance with all organizational policies and procedures regarding documentation.
- Contribute to High-Quality Service Provision: Participate in an induction program and ongoing training opportunities. Engage in regular supervision and contribute to team meetings. Uphold the values of respect and inclusivity towards individuals, their families, colleagues, and the public. Consider the diverse backgrounds and needs of individuals, including age, gender, ethnicity, religion, abilities, and personal preferences. Adhere to policies and maintain a safe, healthy, and supportive environment for everyone.
- Additional Duties: Perform other duties as assigned by your line manager or senior.
Essential Skills
- Communication Skills: Ability to adapt communication to different needs (e.g. simple language, visual aids, non-verbal cues). Understanding of alternative communication methods such as Makaton or Picture Exchange Communication System. Patience when supporting individuals who may take longer to express themselves.
- Person-Centred Approach: Tailoring activities to each resident’s abilities, interests, and support needs. Promoting independence and choice. Respecting dignity and individuality.
- Understanding of Learning & Physical Disabilities: Awareness of conditions such as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Cerebral Palsy. Adapting activities to suit cognitive and physical abilities. Recognising sensory needs and triggers.
- Creativity & Adaptability: Modifying activities so everyone can participate. Using sensory activities, music, movement, or tactile materials. Thinking creatively to overcome physical barriers.
- Safeguarding Knowledge: Protecting vulnerable individuals from harm. Understanding safeguarding policies and reporting concerns.
- Teamwork: Working alongside carers, therapists, and support staff. Sharing observations about residents’ wellbeing and engagement.
- Health & Safety Awareness: Safe moving and handling practices. Risk assessing activities for people with mobility or health needs.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in Disability Support: Previous work with individuals with learning or physical disabilities. Experience supporting communication or behavioural needs.
- Relevant Qualifications: NVQ / Diploma in Health & Social Care. Training in disability support, behaviour management, or activity coordination.
- Knowledge of Inclusive Activities: Designing activities that are accessible for all abilities. Understanding sensory play and therapeutic activities.
- IT & Record-Keeping Skills: Recording participation and progress. Using care planning systems.
- Leadership & Motivation: Encouraging participation in a supportive way. Building confidence and self-esteem in residents.
