Council Tax Billing Officer — East Anglia (Hybrid – remote with occasional office attendance)

£25.65 per hour Umbrella • Full time, 36.25 hours per week • 3-month contract

Salt Recruitment’s Local Government team are supporting a Local Government body with the recruitment of a Council Tax Billing Officer to join their Revenues and Benefits service. This role sits within the Billing & Compliance team, playing a key part in delivering a high-quality, resident-focused service. You will be responsible for the accurate and timely administration of all aspects of Council Tax billing, including liability decisions, processing discounts and exemptions, and issuing bills. The position offers the flexibility to work from home on a full-time basis, with IT equipment provided. You will be required to attend the office in Basildon on your first day to collect your equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Administering Council Tax billing processes efficiently and accurately
  • Applying legislation, policies and guidelines correctly when determining liability, exemptions, discounts and reliefs
  • Administering the Council Tax Reduction Scheme in line with local policy
  • Maintaining accurate taxation records and reconciling with Valuation Office Agency data where required
  • Undertaking enquiries to verify entitlement to discounts and exemptions
  • Liaising with Visiting Officers and other internal teams regarding queries and new dwellings
  • Communicating with residents clearly and professionally about their accounts
  • Ensuring compliance with data protection, health and safety, and equality policies

About You

  • Strong knowledge of Council Tax law and procedures
  • Experience using CIVICA Open Revenues
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office
  • GCSE-level education (or equivalent), ideally with strength in maths and English
