The Sales Manager is responsible for proactively driving revenue growth for the hotel through the development, management, and conversion of a strong pipeline of MICE, Group, and Local Corporate business. The role focuses on new account acquisition, relationship building, and successful conversion of opportunities into confirmed business, while maintaining strong alignment with Marriott brand standards and commercial objectives. This position plays a key role in strengthening the hotel’s presence within the Manchester corporate and events market by building long‑term relationships with corporate decision‑makers, event planners, and key influencers.
Key Responsibilities
- Commercial & Sales Performance: Proactively identify, target, and develop new MICE, group, and local corporate accounts to drive incremental room nights, meetings, and event revenue. Build and actively manage a strong sales pipeline of potential accounts, ensuring consistent prospecting activity and measurable conversion results. Convert qualified leads into confirmed business through effective needs analysis, proposal presentation, negotiation, and follow‑up. Achieve and exceed individual revenue targets in line with the hotel’s overall commercial strategy. Support the Director of Sales & Marketing with the execution of the annual sales plan for MICE, groups, and local corporate segments. Participate in RFP processes, site inspections, client presentations, and contract negotiations within approved parameters. Maintain accurate and up‑to‑date account and opportunity information within Marriott CRM and Sales systems.
- Manchester Market Development: Build new relationships with key corporate accounts, event planners, agencies, production companies, and local influencers to expand penetration in high‑value segments. Actively represent the hotel within the Manchester business community through networking events, trade shows, sales blitzes, and industry functions. Identify and target emerging local sectors (e.g., professional services, tech, media, sports, education, and associations). Develop a strong understanding of competitor activity and market trends to identify opportunities and protect market share. Strengthen the hotel’s reputation as a preferred venue for meetings, conferences, and group business in Manchester city centre.
- Account Management & Relationship Building: Develop long‑term, commercially beneficial relationships with assigned and newly acquired accounts. Conduct regular account reviews and business development meetings to maximise repeat and referral business. Act as the main point of contact for clients during the sales process, ensuring a seamless handover to Events or Operations teams. Ensure client satisfaction through proactive communication and post‑event follow‑up.
- Reporting & Administration: Produce clear and accurate monthly sales reports, including pipeline activity, conversions, production results, and account performance. Track personal sales activity, including calls, appointments, site inspections, and proposals, in line with department KPIs. Maintain strong administrative discipline, ensuring timely follow‑up, accurate documentation, and compliance with SOPs and brand standards. Support forecasting and budget processes by providing reliable data and market insight.
- Collaboration & Internal Engagement: Work closely with the Events, Groups, Revenue Management, and Operations teams to maximise conversion and delivery of business. Actively participate in sales, revenue, and commercial meetings, contributing insights and agreed actions. Support hotel‑wide initiatives aimed at improving conversion, guest satisfaction, and revenue performance.
- Guest & Brand Representation: Always represent the hotel and Marriott brand professionally. Deliver a customer‑focused sales approach that aligns with Marriott service culture. Support hotel initiatives to engage Elite Marriott Bonvoy members and key corporate clients where appropriate.
- Accountability: Achieve assigned revenue, room night, and activity targets. Maintain a healthy and measurable sales pipeline with consistent conversion. Contribute to the hotel’s overall market share growth in MICE, Groups & Local Corporate segments.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Proven experience in hotel sales, preferably within MICE, Groups, or corporate segments.
- Experience within a Marriott environment and knowledge of Marriott systems is an advantage.
- Strong negotiation, communication, and relationship‑building skills.
- Results‑driven with a proactive and organised approach to sales activity.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively under pressure.
- Proficient in MS Office; knowledge of Opera PMS, Sales & Catering, Salesforce, and Lanyon preferred.
- High level of professionalism, integrity, and attention to detail.
