Job Summary

You will be joining our Platform Team, part of the wider Technology organisation responsible for the infrastructure tooling and environments that power our real-time data platform supporting customers around the clock. Our mission is to enable engineering teams to deliver software quickly, securely and reliably through automation, observability and continuous improvement. We work closely with our Engineering and Data teams to design, build and evolve a scalable platform in AWS, ensuring performance, resilience and security at every layer. As a DevOps Engineer, you will be part of a team that has already embedded a DevOps culture and is now focused on refining and extending our platform capabilities. You will contribute to improving our CI/CD pipelines, Infrastructure as Code and monitoring frameworks, helping us to deliver an exceptional developer experience and a robust modern cloud platform.

Key Responsibilities

  • AWS Expertise: Our platform is built entirely in AWS, so you will need hands-on experience beyond the basics. You should be comfortable designing, deploying and supporting production workloads using core AWS services with at least 3 years experience managing AWS-based production environments.
  • Serverless-First Mindset: We take a serverless-first approach, making use of managed services such as Lambda, ECS, Fargate and API Gateway where they bring reliability and speed to delivery.
  • CI/CD Pipelines: We use CircleCI to deliver our applications. Experience with any major CI/CD tool (e.g. Jenkins, GitHub Actions, TeamCity) is valuable; what matters is a solid understanding of automated build and release processes.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): All of our infrastructure is defined through CloudFormation. You should be confident in writing and maintaining efficient reusable templates in YAML.
  • Scripting and Automation: A good grasp of Bash or Python is essential. You will use scripting daily to automate processes and improve system efficiency.
  • Containerisation & Orchestration: We use Docker and Amazon ECS in production. Experience with any container orchestration platform (including EKS/Kubernetes) is highly transferable.
  • Version Control & Collaboration: Strong working knowledge of Git and GitHub. You will participate in peer reviews and contribute to a culture of shared ownership and continuous improvement.
  • Communication & Teamwork: We are a collaborative team that values open discussion and shared learning. You should be able to explain complex topics clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences and appreciate the importance of balancing speed with reliability.
  • Problem Solving & Continuous Improvement: You will need strong analytical skills, a focus on root cause analysis and a mindset that prioritises learning and improvement over quick fixes.
  • On-Call Participation: This role includes participation in our on-call rota to support 24/7 services. On-call work is recognised and compensated, and we continually invest in platform reliability to reduce incidents.

Driving Value

Everything the Platform Team does is about enabling the wider business to deliver faster, safer and more reliably. By improving automation, resilience and developer experience, you will directly contribute to the stability of our services and the pace at which new value reaches our customers.

What’s Desired

We are looking for someone who brings hands-on experience operating AWS services at scale and who is passionate about building reliable, secure and performant systems. You will have a curiosity for learning, an eye for improvement and an enthusiasm for sharing knowledge within the team.

Technical Experience

  • Advanced AWS Knowledge: Experience with core and advanced services such as ECS, Lambda, Kinesis Streams/Firehose, API Gateway, DynamoDB, SQS, Cognito and VPC networking concepts.
  • Security and Compliance Awareness: Experience working within ISO27001 or similarly structured security frameworks with an appreciation of how compliance supports business trust and service reliability.
  • Database Knowledge: Familiarity with DynamoDB and other database technologies is advantageous.
  • Event-Driven and Real-Time Systems: Understanding of event-driven architectures or real-time data platforms and their operational challenges.
  • Networking Proficiency: Solid grasp of networking beyond the basics, including routing, VPNs and load-balancing concepts.
  • Coding and Automation: Experience with programming in Go, Java or TypeScript and a mindset for automating repeatable processes using tools such as Packer and Ansible to build and maintain AMIs.

Mindset and Approach

You are someone who:

  • Enjoys solving complex problems and seeing your work directly impact the platform's stability and scalability.
  • Values collaboration and shared success, understanding that platform engineering is as much about enabling others as it is about technical delivery.
  • Embraces continuous learning, exploring new AWS services and open-source technologies to evolve our platform for the future.
