Machinist – Deeside, UK
Salamander Solutions Ltd is a global manufacturer of heater cable systems for the oil industry and is seeking a skilled and experienced Machinist to join our Deeside team in North Wales, UK.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe, efficient, and quality-driven operation of CNC machining equipment used in the manufacture, modification, maintenance, and repair of tooling, fixtures, machine components, and production equipment.
This hands-on role requires experience operating and programming CNC vertical machining centers, interpreting engineering drawings, and producing precision-machined components to tight tolerances.
The Machinist will work closely with production, maintenance, engineering, and quality teams to support manufacturing operations while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and continuous improvement.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Set up, program, and operate CNC vertical machining centers, including Haas VF-Series equipment, to manufacture precision components and tooling.
- Interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and work instructions to produce parts within required tolerances and quality standards.
- Select and install cutting tools, fixtures, work-holding devices, and machine offsets necessary for machining operations.
- Perform machine setups, first-piece inspections, and in-process quality checks to ensure product conformity.
- Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and program-related issues to minimize downtime and maintain production schedules.
- Conduct routine machine maintenance and housekeeping activities to ensure safe and reliable equipment operation.
- Support the manufacture, modification, repair, and maintenance of production tooling, fixtures, spare parts, and equipment components.
- Maintain accurate production records, inspection documentation, and machine operating data in accordance with company procedures.
- Collaborate with engineering, maintenance, and production personnel to support operational objectives and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Ensure compliance with all safety, quality, and environmental requirements while maintaining an organized work area.
Minimum Qualifications
- 5+ years of CNC machining experience in a manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated experience operating and programming CNC vertical machining centers, preferably Haas equipment including VF-Series machines.
- Proven ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T, and technical specifications.
- Experience performing machine setups, tooling changes, offset adjustments, and first-off inspections.
- Strong understanding of machining processes, cutting tools, work-holding methods, and precision measurement techniques.
- Experience using inspection equipment such as micrometers, calipers, height gauges, bore gauges, and other precision measuring instruments.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Experience with CNC programming using G-code and conversational programming methods.
- Knowledge of milling operations involving a wide variety of materials, including stainless steel, alloys, and specialty metals.
- Familiarity with CAD/CAM software and the ability to modify machining programs when required.
- Understanding of manufacturing quality systems, inspection methods, root cause analysis, and corrective action processes.
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, 5S, continuous improvement, and workplace organization principles.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills related to machining processes, tooling, and equipment performance.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for documentation, shift handovers, and cross-functional collaboration.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage multiple assignments in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing high-quality precision components.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety and adherence to safety procedures and best practices.
