Senior Nurse Hospice and Palliative Care

Location: Thirsk Based
Hours: 30-37.5 hours per week (includes nights and weekends)
Salary: £45,969.69 per annum FTE (split of 55% of shifts in social hours/45% unsocial)

We are looking for a Senior Nurse to play an essential role in delivering outstanding end-of-life care while supporting and developing our incredible team. You’ll be joining us at an exciting time as we welcome our first in-patients at our brand-new Hospice at the Lambert in Thirsk.

Main duties of the job
As a Senior Nurse on our inpatient unit at Herriot Hospice, you’ll play a key role, helping to shape high-quality, patient-centred hospice care. Alongside delivering expert clinical care, you’ll provide value-led leadership, supporting and developing others, promoting best practice, and contributing to the ongoing improvement of our services.
In this role, you’ll:
- Deliver expert palliative and end-of-life care with empathy and professionalism.
- Take clinical leadership on shift, supporting and guiding the wider nursing and care team.
- Act as a mentor and role model, promoting championing continuous learning and a positive team culture.
- Play an active role in service improvement, clinical audits, and governance.
This Senior Nurse role is based in Thirsk, North Yorkshire and is commutable from areas including Ripon, Darlington, Durham, York and Teesside.
You will need to be an experienced and compassionate Senior Nurse with strong clinical judgement and the confidence to lead and support others.

Job Purpose
- To provide on shift leadership and management of our Hospice Nurses and HealthCare Assistants to deliver patient-centred care and support
- To be part of the inpatient services management team to deliver service improvements to clinical services
- To support others and to be able to independently plan and deliver patient-centred care, working closely with patients and their families.
- Act as the shift coordinator, and teach others to do so, overseeing high-quality team nursing care and coordinating wider team care that puts patients at the heart of what we do.
- To act as the key worker for a designated caseload, showing nursing leadership by providing care as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Person Specification
- Registered Nurse with NMC Nursing Degree or suitable alternative
- Have or be prepared to work towards practice assessors qualification
- Current Practical experience of Nursing in a clinical setting
- Ability to plan, deliver, and evaluate nursing care
- Ability to assess complex patient needs and escalate appropriately if required
- A good level of understanding and interest in Palliative Care and End of Life Care
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent record keeping skills and documentation
- IT literate with the ability to use Microsoft and Outlook as a minimum
- Understanding of Infection Control
- European Palliative Care Certificate or specific palliative care post graduate learning
- Demonstrable experience of leading the care for patients at end of life or requiring symptom control
- Understanding of Clinical Audit
