Registered Nurse (Hospice / Palliative Care) in Hambleton

Location: Herriot Hospice, Thirsk

Hours: Part-time and full-time hours available, 22.5 - 37.5 hours per week (shifts include nights and weekends)

Salary: £42,313.23 per annum FTE, rising to £43,505.98 per annum FTE (split of 55% of shifts in social hours/45% unsocial)

We're looking for experienced Registered Nurses to join us at this exciting time as we welcome our first in-patients at our brand new Hospice at the Lambert in Thirsk.

Main duties of the job

Your role as a Hospice Nurse

As a Hospice Nurse, you'll lead by example in delivering high‑quality, holistic care within our welcoming inpatient unit. You'll provide vital support not just to patients, but to families and colleagues helping to create an environment of trust, peace, and compassion and work in a close‑knit team where kindness, empathy, and clinical expertise truly matter.

In this role, you'll:

• Develop tailored care plans, administer medication and manage symptoms to ensure comfort
• Work collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team and manage patient admissions and discharges
• Provide emotional support for patients and families, offering compassionate care

Job responsibilities

Job Purpose

Plan and deliver patient‑centred care, working closely with patients and their families. Once trained, act as the shift coordinator, overseeing high‑quality team nursing care and coordinating wider team care that puts patients' at the heart of what we do.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Intervention

• Places quality at the centre of care by providing evidence‑based, individualised, and personalised support through holistic needs assessment, risk assessments, care planning, and evaluation of all care interventions.
• Acts as a Key Worker for a clinical caseload, working proactively to manage care and provide easy access to ongoing support.
• Demonstrates excellent communication skills and expertise in hospice care, including the ability to manage emotional distress for patients and their loved ones when needed.
• Maintains accurate patient records.

Leadership and people management:

• Effectively allocates work and maintains responsibility for delegated tasks.
• Demonstrates leadership through clinical expertise, delivering high‑quality, person‑centred care.
• Encourages patient and community involvement within the practice setting.

Professional Development

• Acquires and applies clinical, technical, and evaluation skills through a broad and in-depth knowledge base.
• Takes personal responsibility for ongoing learning and development through reflective practice, self‑appraisal, and actively engages with the learning and development opportunities provided by the hospice.

Special Features of the job

Working autonomously within a team, you'll deliver patient‑centred and holistic care. Our service operates 24/7, 365 days a year, with clinical roles rostered to ensure round‑the‑clock coverage.

Governance

Support the organisation in facilitating: Reviewing and engaging in audits, developing and implementing policies and guidelines, as well as safe operating procedures, in line with Hospice procedures.
