Job Purpose
To support the hospice retail department by ensuring the efficient and safe collection and delivery of donated goods, furniture and stock, while providing excellent service to donors, customers, and volunteers. The role includes maintaining hospice vehicles, supporting shop teams with stock management, ensuring shops are safe and clear of waste, and assisting with events or fundraising activities when required. The post holder plays a key role in helping hospice shops achieve their income targets, supporting the overall fundraising efforts of the organisation.
Key Responsibilities
- Retail & Fundraising Support
Collect and deliver donated goods, furniture and stock from donors, customers, and between hospice shops, ensuring items are handled safely and respectfully. Distribute stock across shops to maintain appropriate stock levels and support income generation. Provide excellent customer service when collecting from or delivering to donors, ensuring a positive experience that reflects the values of the hospice. Keep shops clear of rubbish and unwanted items, disposing of these appropriately via recycling centres or other approved methods. Accurately maintain records of collections, deliveries and other work-related documentation. Support shop managers and volunteers as required, including assisting with moving stock or furniture within shops. Assist the retail and fundraising teams at events, functions and promotional activities when required. Ensure all Health & Safety requirements are adhered to, including safe manual handling and vehicle loading/unloading procedures. Contribute to achieving retail financial targets by working collaboratively with staff, volunteers and donors. - Vehicle Care & Maintenance
Ensure hospice vehicles are kept clean, tidy and roadworthy at all times. Carry out basic daily, weekly and monthly vehicle checks, reporting any defects promptly. Arrange servicing, MOTs and repairs at agreed times in line with hospice procedures. Ensure the security of hospice vehicles and donated stock at all times. Maintain accurate vehicle usage logs and associated paperwork as required. - Training & Development
Complete all required mandatory and role-specific training, including online training modules, within agreed timescales. Participate in ongoing training and development opportunities relevant to the role. - General Duties
Report and record all accidents, incidents and near misses in line with hospice policy. Weekend work may occasionally be required to support collections, deliveries or fundraising events. Carry out any other reasonable tasks or responsibilities as requested by the Line Manager, Senior Management or Chief Executive, including support to other hospice departments where necessary. - Standard Hospice Duties & Responsibilities
Maintain confidentiality at all times. Adhere to Health & Safety at Work legislation, taking responsibility for your own safety and that of colleagues, volunteers, patients and the public. Be aware of fire procedures and attend mandatory fire safety and other training as required. Attend and complete all mandatory training relevant to the role (including online training) as directed by your Line Manager.
Person Specification
- Essential:
Full clean driving licence (including ability to drive a 3.5 tonne van). Experience of driving in a work capacity. Good level of physical fitness (role involves lifting and moving furniture/stock). Strong interpersonal and customer service skills. Ability to work flexibly across different locations and occasional weekends. - Desirable:
Experience in a retail, charity shop or logistics environment. Knowledge of manual handling techniques. Awareness of Health & Safety practices.
