Job Description

As a Senior Platform Engineer in the Cloud PaaS team , you will contribute to the development, delivery and operation of a modern self-service Kubernetes platform, which serves the needs of hundreds of developers across numerous application teams. Enabling Sainsbury\’s to deliver a great shopping experience to 20M customers a week, in as fast, safe and efficient way possible.

It is the PaaS\’ team\’s responsibility to build and operate a compelling internal Platform product, ensuring we offer capabilities to meet the needs of our customers; the application teams. We leverage many modern cloud native technologies as part of our PaaS product, including; EKS, Helm, Istio, Flux, Terraform and GitHub Actions (to name a few) but we aim to make technology choices that complement our existing ecosystem and crucially add value, not because they are new and shiny.

You\’ll be a role model for best practices, championing a customer centric mindset and a passion for finding creative ways to solve problems, as well as mentoring fellow engineers as a progressive member of the engineering community. We\’d also like you to be yourself – analytical, curious and unafraid to challenge the status quo.

More about the role

  1. You\’ll be part of a team that owns the architecture, development and operation of a large-scale PaaS responsible for hosting containerised workloads in the cloud.
  2. You\’ll work with the team to implement the product technical roadmap for Sainsbury\’s strategic PaaS.
  3. You\’ll work with technologies at Enterprise scale.
  4. You may be asked to participate in out of hours support and should aim to build reliability and fault tolerance into the product, as well as engineering systems that are simple to diagnose and fix.
  5. You\’ll guide, support and enable performance within the team through providing technical knowledge and ideas.

More about you

  1. Great expertise in modern Cloud engineering practices, including deep knowledge of system architecture, reliability engineering and DevOps principles.
  2. Proven experience of cloud architecture, container orchestration, infrastructure as code and CI/CD.
  3. Proven ability to write code in one or more of our core languages (Typescript, Go, Python, Bash).
  4. Self-driven and constantly striving to improve your team, division and peers.
  5. Drive for advocacy of agile/lean delivery methodologies.
  6. A passion for delivering solutions to customers, owning the whole SDLC and living the DevSecOps principles.
  7. Ideally, prior experience of developing and operating a self-service Platform-as-a-Service.
  8. A passion for enhancing your knowledge and evidence of curiosity in emerging tech.
  9. Display pragmatism, empathy and understanding when interacting with team, stakeholders and customers.
