As the Concept Architectural Designer at Sainsbury's, you will play a crucial role in supporting the concept design manager in developing new store formats and establishing Macro Principles for Interior Architecture and Design. Your responsibilities will span across all formats and fascias within the Sainsbury's brand, encompassing various aspects such as store approach, customer flow, layout and landscape of fixtures, as well as the visual appearance of walls, floors, and ceilings. You will collaborate closely with external agencies and suppliers throughout the design process, ensuring effective communication, feedback, and appraisal of output. Furthermore, you will develop design principles that enhance the shopping experience, delivering inviting and distinctive stores that are intuitive and easy to navigate. Your expertise will also involve managing and developing the asset library for the design team, as well as providing regular project updates to stakeholders and communicating weekly updates to the Concept Design Manager. Success in this role will be measured by the commercial success of your physical retail design concepts, clear communication with stakeholders, effective guidance and direction provided to the delivery teams, and an in-depth understanding of retail and architectural design trends and best practices.

Essential criteria

  • Proven experience delivering physical retail environments (concept to execution).
  • Interior architectural design experience across store formats (layout, customer flow, fixtures, finishes).
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement store design concepts and principles.
  • Experience managing or contributing to design guidelines / frameworks (e.g. macro principles).
