The level of data, transactions and variety involved. Then you’ll realise this is a modern software engineering environment, because it has to be. We’ve made significant investment in the standards and principles that shape how we work. We iterate, learn, experiment and champion ways of working such as Agile, Scrum and XP. So you can look forward to exciting opportunities across everything from AI to reusable tech.

About the Role

Join our Store Operations technology team and build the tools that power the shop floor. In this role, you’ll design and develop intuitive, high‑impact applications used daily by colleagues in-store—from streamlining processes to enhancing customer experiences in real time. It’s a chance to see your work in action, solving real problems at scale and shaping how stores operate across the business. We’re looking for a talented Senior .NET Engineer to help design, build and deliver high‑performing technology that improves customer experience, drives business efficiency and reduces operating costs. You’ll help shape technical direction and mentor others whilst championing engineering excellence and be a valued contributor to our broader engineering community. You’ll bring curiosity, analytical thinking and a willingness to challenge how things are done — always looking for ways to improve engineering practices within your team.

What You’ll Do

  • Design and build large‑scale, high‑performance services using the latest technologies and engineering standards.
  • Work with technologies such as Next.js, SQL, MongoDB, Kubernetes, Docker, serverless functions and event‑driven architecture.
  • Implement and enhance cloud-based solutions across AWS and Google Cloud Platform.
  • Help lead the technical roadmap, shaping the long‑term architecture and engineering strategy.
  • Share knowledge, contribute to best practices and enable continuous improvement within the engineering community.
  • Lead the design and support of internal frameworks that enhance engineering capabilities across the Sainsbury’s Group.
  • Engineer across the entire product lifecycle— from inception through to decommissioning.
  • Consider cost, scalability, and operational support implications in your technical decision‑making.

Who You Are

You’re a proactive, driven engineer who is passionate about modern engineering practices, cloud technology and delivering high‑quality solutions. You promote agile ways of working and enjoy solving complex problems in a collaborative environment.

  • Strong experience in .NET development and associated engineering principles.
  • Proficiency with relational and non‑relational databases (e.g., SQL, MongoDB).
  • Experience working with cloud platforms like Azure.
  • Knowledge of React.js/Typescript and modern frontend development standards.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, and container orchestration.
  • Understanding of serverless functions and event‑driven architecture.
  • Solid understanding of software design, security principles, and DevSecOps practices.
  • Hands‑on experience with CI/CD pipelines and infrastructure‑as‑code.
  • Curiosity for emerging technologies and a commitment to continuous learning.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, communication, and mentoring skills.
  • Empathy and the ability to support, coach, and empower colleagues to deliver their best.
  • Self‑driven with a desire to improve processes, teams, and engineering practices.
