Why join us
Every decision about where and how Sainsbury's grows draws on spatial data, and on the tools that turn that data into insight. Our Location & Portfolio Planning team builds and runs those tools. We give our Location Planners, the Property team and the wider business the maps, apps and data products they need to make decisions at pace. As our Spatial Data Analyst, you'll help shape what our products show and the data that powers them.
What you'll do
- You'll work closely with our Senior Spatial Analyst (your manager) and our Senior Spatial Data Science Engineer to develop, maintain and monitor the data, tools and apps our planners rely on.
- You'll build new products in ArcGIS, Tableau, Alteryx and Excel that improve location insight and support decision making.
- You'll also look after our in-house apps, macros, ESRI service layers and enterprise GIS platform.
- When something needs fixing, you'll be the go-to person, troubleshooting technical issues and handling data requests from colleagues across Sainsbury's.
- Alongside creating geospatial outputs, you'll develop the pipelines, integration and quality controls that feed our mapping and location planning tools, using Alteryx and SQL to automate how data flows through them.
- You'll spend time with Location Planners to understand how they work, act on their feedback and design intuitive solutions.
- You'll also create clear documentation and training that helps the whole team build its skills.
- You'll keep up with developments in spatial analytics and bring in new ideas, and there's real scope to shape the role around your interests.
Who you are
- You understand spatial data and the complexities of handling it, and you have working knowledge of GIS systems, ideally ESRI products.
- You're numerate and logical, you enjoy solving problems and using data to support decisions, and you're comfortable working on your own: planning your workload, managing projects and meeting deadlines.
- Experience with Alteryx, Tableau, SQL, Snowflake, VBA, Python or GitHub would be a real plus, but we'll provide training.
- Retail experience and confidence presenting to stakeholder groups would be an advantage.
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable working knowledge of GIS systems (ideally ESRI products such as ArcGIS Pro and ArcGIS Online/Enterprise), including evidence of handling and managing spatial data.
- Evidence of using data, analysis or visualisation to solve problems and support decision-making.
- Proven ability to plan, prioritise and deliver your own projects and workload to agreed deadlines.
- Demonstrable experience creating clear documentation, supporting materials or training that help others use data, tools or products.
