Purpose of the Job
The role of Prototype Technician will undertake general build and assembly related tasks, primarily focussed on the assembly of electric motors and e-drive systems, from one off prototype assemblies through to low level, pre-mass production volumes. Each operation is carried out to exacting safety, quality and efficiency standards, to meet customer expectations and internal targets and objectives.
As part of the Engineering Team, the role will also be involved in the instrumentation and build of new prototype machines, taking information from engineering drawings, sharing data and knowledge gained with other central functions, such as Test, Development & Design team members. Furthermore, following inhouse and/or field-based validation testing, the role will undertake meticulous tear down and analysis of the motors/e-drive assemblies and associated subassemblies, including accurate data collection, to aid the assessment of component durability / fault finding etc.
Main duties to be carried out:
- Assembly of electric motors working across all production processes, using in house developed manufacturing equipment and procedures.
- Working with the Engineering team to deliver prototype units in line with design intent and quality standards according to the build plan.
- Producing low volume production runs of new or existing products for customer projects, including shift working where required.
- Preparation and build of test components for assembly, to include basic inspection and measurement; building and preparing prototype units to a consistently high standard of quality and according to the plan.
- Ensure all documentation, be that manual or electronic, relating to the assembly or teardown of prototype units is completed and submitted accurately and according to plan.
- Actively seek improvements in the assembly process or product quality and help implement the same with a proactive and creative approach.
- Working in collaboration with Engineering and Quality Teams on root cause investigations, tear-downs and analysis.
- Using mechanical and electrical equipment to perform various tests on individual components and/or complete units.
- Raise any issues identified involving components, equipment or tooling with the line manager as soon as possible.
- Implement 5S activities for all prototype build areas and comply with company HS&E policies, practices and procedures and suggest areas for improvement.
Qualifications and Experience required:
- Previous experience in engineering environment.
- Experience in electric motor build, tear-down and repair.
- Ability to read engineering drawings.
Skills and Capabilities required:
- Strong attention to detail and self-motivated individual.
- Team player and able to work and communicate effectively.
- Strong technical and communication skills.
- Demonstrate a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail, highlighting any abnormalities or deviations from the prescribed build process or component quality identified.
- Some experience in fault-finding techniques.
- Some experience of diagnostics and problem-solving investigations.
- Appreciation of electrical safety requirements.
- PC literacy and basic office packages.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to EXEDY and customer sites globally.
- Willingness to learn new specialist manufacturing processes.
