We are looking for an experienced Pre-Sales Engineer to take ownership of the full bid development process for complex industrial automation and control systems projects.
This is not an entry-level or transitional role.
It requires a strong blend of technical solution development, commercial estimating, and proposal delivery, with the ability to interpret client specifications, develop compliant solutions from first principles, and produce commercially compelling submissions.
You will define technical architectures, develop cost estimates and engineering hours, produce proposal documentation, and support customer engagement through clarification meetings, presentations, and post-tender discussions.
The role covers a broad range of control systems technologies, including PLC, SCADA, DCS, SIS, F&G, networks, and system integration, with a strong understanding of project lifecycle delivery, functional safety, and cyber security principles essential.
We’re looking for a proactive, commercially aware engineer with solid industrial controls experience who can work independently, quickly understand new specifications, and deliver high-quality proposals to challenging deadlines.
Experience with platforms such as Siemens and Rockwell is advantageous but not essential.

You will
- Evaluate customer requirements and prepare cost-effective technical solutions aligned with engineering best practice.
- Develop conceptual designs including control panel architecture, MCC arrangements, PLC/SCADA system concepts, networks, servers and associated infrastructure.
- Produce compliant, persuasive tender submissions including technical descriptions, clarifications, exclusions, delivery plans and commercial considerations.
- Develop accurate estimates for both materials (BOM creation, supplier engagement, quotations) and engineering hours across disciplines.
- Support sales colleagues in pre- and post-tender discussions.
- Participate in tender reviews and risk assessments, escalating where appropriate.
- Coordinate inputs from engineering, supply chain and subcontractors.
- Manage multiple tenders simultaneously and provide progress updates.
- Support continuous improvement within the proposals process.
- Follow all health and safety regulations, procedures and protocols.
- Assist with any other duties reasonably requested and in line with therequirements of this role.
We are looking for
Experience and Knowledge
- Background in electrical, control, automation, or safety systems engineering.
- Understanding of the project lifecycle, from concept through delivery.
- Awareness of the functional safety lifecycle (SIL, ESD, F&G systems etc.).
- Ability to specify or evaluate PLC hardware, networks, control panels, servers and system architectures.
- Ability to read and interpret technical specifications and extract scope, risk and compliance requirements.
- Experience creating estimates or engineering Bo Ms is highly advantageous.
- A Degree/HND or equivalent in a related field.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong technical writing ability, able to translate engineering concepts into clear proposal documentation.
- Commercial awareness with the ability to identify and articulate risk, assumptions and dependencies.
- Excellent problem solving, attention to detail, and organisational skills.
- Effective communication across internal teams and with clients.
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
