Overview
In this role you will act as the technical lead for metrology within a defined manufacturing domain, shaping measurement strategies and advancing calibration and inspection capabilities. You will collaborate with Engineering, Quality and Program teams to ensure metrology accuracy, compliance and continuous improvement. Your work will span from selecting and deploying measurement technologies to driving data-driven decisions that improve quality and cycle time. This is a hands-on leadership position at the intersection of metrology, manufacturing and CI, with a clear impact on production performance.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the technical lead for a defined manufacturing domain or process, guiding ME and Operations teams
- Design, implement, optimise and continuously improve manufacturing processes for safety, efficiency, quality and cost-effectiveness
- Define and optimise measuring strategies (CMM, laser tracker, scanning, vision systems) and ensure capability, accuracy and compliance of measurement systems
- Approve inspection plans, MSA, gauge R&R and uncertainty analyses
- Lead development and deployment of SPC strategies for measurement processes and sampling
- Resolve complex dimensional variation issues and drive metrology technology introduction
- Lead cross-functional teams to resolve dimensional issues affecting quality or flow
- Represent site metrology capability during audits and customer reviews
- Mentor engineers, inspectors and CMM programmers; engage with metrology OEMs and suppliers
- Ensure compliance with EN9100/AS9100, GD&T, calibration standards and customer dimensional requirements
- Own configuration for measurement programs, probing strategies and inspection datasets
- Lead audits of calibration systems, measurement methods and SPC/variation-control processes
- Define metrology technology roadmap (scanning, automation, model-based definition) and CI projects to reduce defects and cycle time
- Develop CAPEX cases for metrology equipment and lead CI to reduce scrap and rework
- Lead risk assessments for measurement systems and approve PFMEAs and control plans
- Mentor and train teams on GD&T, measurement systems and metrology tools
Key requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Industrial, or related engineering field
- Experience in manufacturing engineering within a regulated industry
- Strong CAD, CAM and process simulation skills
- Solid knowledge of Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma
- Experience with ERP/MRP/MES systems and manufacturing documentation (BOMs, routers)
- Proven project management skills
- Experience with APQP standards and tools
- Experience with assembly manufacturing processes and reading GD&T
- Mechanical, electronics or production engineering background with relevant qualifications
- Strong problem-solving, communication and leadership abilities
