We are recruiting an Environmental Advisor to support the delivery of environmental requirements across a portfolio of civils and infrastructure projects. This is a hands-on, project-facing role, suited to someone who is degree qualified in an environmental discipline, has relevant construction/highways experience, and can work closely with site teams to keep standards high and risks controlled.
The role will support a mix of ongoing civils projects, including local authority and national highways framework works, plus a large long-term civils scheme in Bedfordshire.
Key responsibilities- Provide environmental support to project teams across civils/highways works, ensuring compliance with legislation, contract requirements and client standards.
- Act as the main environmental point of contact for site teams, subcontractors and clients, providing practical advice and guidance.
- Develop, implement and maintain project environmental documentation including management plans, aspect/impact registers and related records.
- Deliver environmental inductions, briefings and toolbox talks to improve on-site awareness and standards.
- Support investigations into environmental incidents/near misses (e.g., spills, pollution risks, nuisance complaints) and implement corrective/preventative actions.
- Manage environmental controls and monitoring as required (noise, dust, water management, waste, ecology constraints, pollution prevention).
- Ensure permits, consents and approvals are in place and complied with where relevant to the project scope.
- Provide environmental input into construction methodology and programme planning to reduce risk and avoid delays.
- Liaise with regulators and external stakeholders where required (e.g., Environment Agency, local authorities, landowners).
- Produce clear written reports, audit findings and performance updates for project and management teams.
- Degree qualified in an environmental discipline (or equivalent relevant qualification/experience).
- Environmental experience within civils, highways, infrastructure or construction.
- Strong working knowledge of environmental compliance and practical site controls (waste, water, pollution prevention, nuisance).
- Confident communicator who can influence site teams and stakeholders.
- Organised, proactive and comfortable supporting multiple sites/projects.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel.
- Experience supporting framework-based delivery (highways/civils) and client-led compliance environments.
- Environmental management system experience (ISO 14001).
- IEMA membership (or working towards).
- Salary: £42,000 to £45,000 depending on experience
