Safeguard Engineering Limited is an Employee Ownership Trust (EOT) – owned by the employees, for the benefit of employees. This means that every team member has a meaningful stake in shaping our business. Their ownership of the business promotes accountability, collaboration, and long-term stability, with our Trustees holding the board to account to ensure that the business is run in the interests of the staff.

We specialise in delivering innovative solutions in safety, environmental management and marine engineering across the defence and commercial sectors. We are committed to excellence, quality, and value for money, with an enthusiastic team of professionals who live these values every day.

Who are we looking for?

We currently have a variety of positions available within our dynamic consultancy teams to support our growing business, specifically in submarine safety. We are explicitly looking for people with a demonstrable background in providing safety support to the Defence Nuclear Enterprise within a consultancy environment who are looking to take on crucial roles within our consultancy business, and develop our services within key customer accounts.

We warmly welcome applicants transitioning from the RN Submarine Service and MoD roles. If you bring strong safety case authorship, hazard analysis and stakeholder engagement experience, we’ll support your transition to a consultancy setting with mentoring and training.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Circa 4+ years’ relevant safety/engineering experience within the Defence Nuclear Enterprise (e.g., RN Submarine Service, SDA, MoD, Tier‑1/2 suppliers).
  • Detailed working knowledge of relevant regulations and standards including Defence Safety Authority, Defence Nuclear Safety Regulations and Naval Authority Certification.
  • Proven track record in the development of safety artefacts, including facilitating HAZID and risk assessments, development of safety cases, and supporting assessments.
  • Proven track record in managing and delivering complex technical projects and/or multiple concurrent technical projects.
  • Nuclear SQEP.
  • Experience working in a consultancy model (client‑facing delivery, time/budget management, proposal input).
  • Proven track record in successfully delivering bids.
  • Proven track record in developing and maintaining successful client relationships, securing enduring workstreams.
  • Proven and recent experience of undertaking detailed hazard and risk analysis utilising such techniques as SWIFT, HAZOP, FMECA, FTA, LOPA, etc.
  • Recent experience in acting as an Independent Safety Auditor/Advisor.
  • Experience of staff management.
  • SEMT or SSMO qualified.
  • Chartered engineer, or working towards registration, and a Member of a relevant professional institution.

You will have a smart, professional approach and will be able to fit in quickly into a growing flexible team. You will need to provide clients with a high level of assurance that they are being supported by a professional, responsible and caring consultancy. You will have excellent communication skills and a high standard of English and grammar supported with a sound technical engineering background. You will need to be highly effective in organising your own time and workload, especially when working from home. Due to the nature of the work, you must have or be able to obtain UK security Clearance (SC).

What you can expect from us:

You’ll join a team where all decisions about the business are made within the business, with a focus on sustainable growth not short-term gain, and where your ideas genuinely shape the future.

In addition to a competitive salary, we offer:

  • An opportunity to join a friendly, welcoming team;
  • We encourage all staff to be a member of an appropriate professional institution and will cover institution membership costs;
  • Extensive training, covering core consultancy skills and technical professional development;
  • Flexible, hybrid working that balances individual and company needs. We actively support flexible working to suit individuals' needs as long as tasking and team objectives are achieved;
  • An annual bonus, after a year’s service, depending on personal performance and company profits;
  • Opportunity to sell holiday allocation or buy additional holiday entitlement;
  • Company Pension Scheme;
  • Private Medical Insurance as an optional benefit (after probation period);
  • Company Life Insurance;
  • Recruitment bounty;
  • Bike to Work scheme.

Your work can be based at any of our offices, as well as partial home working. Outside of attendance at internal meetings there will be a requirement for regular attendance at client sites.

Safeguard Engineering welcomes applicants from all backgrounds and is committed to an inclusive recruitment process, ensuring reasonable adjustments where needed.
