The Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing general medical care and treatment to clients, under the direction of a physician. The practitioner performs history, physical examinations, and preventive health measures, provides consultation and liaison throughout the facility, performs daily rounds as directed by the supervising physician, prescribes medications, and offers clinical assessments and diagnosis. The role works collaboratively with the medical/clinical staff under state licensure guidelines and may include telehealth work in agreement with the CEO.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Gathers, develops, and evaluates age‑appropriate history and physical (H&P) client data in collaboration with client, family, and health care team for physician’s use.
  • Assesses and re‑assesses physical, psychosocial, and cultural needs of clients and formulates measures to meet those needs.
  • Provides screening and medication management to clients served.
  • Establishes priorities in planning and organizing client care based on H&P assessment and participates in the formulation of the client Master Treatment Plan.
  • Encourages family involvement in client care, responds to identified client and family educational needs, and assists in client teaching related to medical needs or medication education.
  • Diagnoses and treats acute, episodic, or chronic illness independently or as part of a healthcare team.
  • Assists the physician with the clinical operation of the program.
  • Documents pertinent data including assessment, interventions, and evaluations; charts clinical observation, evaluations, and treatment of clients in required time according to facility guidelines.
  • Collaborates with physicians and other staff on establishing realistic outcome goals as needed.
  • Implements appropriate health care interventions using the guidelines of Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) prescriptive practice.
  • Reviews medical reports released under the name of the Facility for assigned clients.
  • Provides guidance to clinical staff working with assigned clients to ensure quality of care.
  • Prepares discharge summaries for physician review.
  • Under a physician collaborative practice agreement as a Family Nurse Practitioner with prescriptive privileges, calls permissible medication to pharmacies.
  • Provides on‑call responsibilities on a scheduled basis directed by medical staff.
  • Focuses on health promotion and disease prevention; may order, perform, or interpret diagnostic tests such as lab work and x‑rays and may prescribe medication.

Education / Experience / Skill Requirements

  • Master of Science in Nursing degree from an accredited school of nursing is required.
  • One or more years’ experience as an RN with the client population of the facility’s line of business is required.
  • Experience in prescribing basic psychotropic medications that would ordinarily be managed in a primary care setting.
  • Clinical experience working with the client population of the facility; ability to demonstrate knowledge of concepts of limit setting, therapeutic boundaries, crisis management, therapeutic treatment, environment, and client care.

Licenses / Designations / Certifications

  • Current Nurse Practitioner license is required, per state regulations and requirements, and may also require a current DEA license.
  • CPR certification and de‑escalation training are required (training available upon hire and offered by the facility).
  • First aid may be required based on state or facility requirements.
