Saab Australia invites Expressions of Interest from suitably qualified and motivated engineers for the role of Naval Combat Systems Engineer. This role supports the development, integration, and sustainment of mission‑critical Combat Systems across the full systems engineering lifecycle, with a focus on the Saab Combat Management System (CMS), associated Support Systems, and Combat System integration activities.

The Naval Combat Systems Engineer will work within a multidisciplinary engineering team to develop and support systems engineering assets across the full lifecycle. The role involves close engagement with customers and end‑users, ensuring Combat System requirements, design, integration, testing, and validation activities meet contractual obligations, operational needs, and defence standards.

Responsibilities
  • Elicit, analyse, and clarify Combat System requirements directly with customers and end‑users.
  • Develop and maintain requirements documentation and traceability matrices aligned to customer priorities and defence standards.
  • Contribute to system architecture, integration, and design activities for complex, software‑intensive systems.
  • Specify, manage, and control changes to Combat System engineering baselines in accordance with defence change control processes.
Design Reviews, Testing & Validation
  • Participate in and support Combat System design reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR), providing clear technical input and addressing integration and interoperability considerations.
  • Coordinate and support customer‑observed testing activities, including functional, integration, and system‑level testing.
  • Validate Combat Systems against agreed operational requirements and performance criteria.
  • Prepare validation reports and customer‑facing technical documentation in line with project deliverables.
Stakeholder Engagement & Collaboration
  • Work closely with Project Engineering, Project Management, and customer stakeholders to define scope, resolve technical issues, and mitigate risks.
  • Support technical working groups, demonstrations, and reviews with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with customers to develop technical solutions that maintain Combat System operational effectiveness throughout the system lifecycle.
Governance & Compliance
  • Ensure compliance with Saab policies, engineering standards, safety regulations, and relevant legislation.
  • Work in accordance with the Saab Code of Conduct and company values of Trust, Drive and Expertise.
Essential Experience
  • Up to 4 years’ experience in an engineering role.
  • Practitioner-level experience in one or more Systems Engineering disciplines, including:
  • Requirements Management
  • System Architecture
  • Systems Integration
  • Verification and Validation
  • Sound understanding of systems engineering principles and lifecycle practices.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and documentation skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast‑paced and dynamic environment.
  • Desirable
    • Experience in complex systems, particularly defence or naval combat systems.
    • Familiarity with ASDEFCON‑based systems engineering practices.
    • Experience with systems engineering tools such as DOORS and Cameo Systems Modeler.
    • Exposure to systems development and sustainment engineering lifecycles.

    Qualifications & Professional Memberships
    • Tertiary qualification (Bachelor’s degree) in a relevant discipline such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Systems Engineering, or a related field.
    • As Defence security clearance is required for this role, applicants must be Australian citizens and eligible to obtain and maintain an NV1 clearance.
