- Job Summary
The Business Development Manager plays a key role in supporting the continued growth of S2S Group by identifying, developing and securing new business opportunities across target markets and industry sectors.
Reporting directly to David, our Group Commercial Director, this position is responsible for expanding the company’s customer base, generating sustainable revenue growth and strengthening its market presence.
The role requires a proactive approach to lead generation, relationship development and opportunity management, with responsibility for overseeing the full sales process from initial engagement through to contract award.
In addition to driving new business acquisition, the role will provide leadership and support to the Account Management function, promoting customer retention, account development and service excellence in line with the Group’s commercial objectives.
Working closely with prospective customers throughout the UK, the postholder will build relationships with key decision-makers, understand business requirements and develop commercial solutions that support both customer objectives and the wider growth strategy of S2S Group.
Responsibility extends to achieving agreed sales, revenue, activity and KPI objectives, alongside maintaining accurate pipeline forecasting and providing regular performance updates to senior management.
Success will be measured through revenue growth, new customer acquisition, pipeline development, team performance, customer retention and overall contribution to the Group’s commercial objectives.
This is an office‑based role, incorporating regular travel for customer meetings, site visits and business development activities as required.
*Due to the nature of the role, there may be occasions when you are required to work outside of your normal working hours and/or travel to other locations as required by the business.
Key Responsibilities
- New Business Development
- Identify, target and secure new business opportunities across key market sectors.
- Develop and manage a robust sales pipeline through proactive prospecting, networking, referrals and lead generation activities.
- Arrange and conduct customer meetings, presentations and site visits throughout the UK.
- Build relationships with key stakeholders and decision‑makers to generate long‑term commercial opportunities.
- Create and deliver compelling proposals, presentations and tender responses.
- Manage the full sales cycle from initial contact through to negotiation, contract award and handover.
- Achieve agreed sales, revenue and activity targets.
- Monitor market trends, competitor activity and industry developments to identify growth opportunities.
- Represent SWS Group professionally at industry events, exhibitions and networking activities where required.
- Customer Growth & Relationship Management
- Support the development of existing customer relationships where growth opportunities have been identified.
- Identify and deliver upselling and cross‑selling opportunities within the current customer base.
- Work closely with Operational and Commercial teams to ensure successful onboarding and delivery of customer requirements.
- Maintain strong relationships with customers to maximise retention and future business opportunities.
- Pipeline & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of customer interactions, opportunities, quotations and forecasts within the company's CRM and sales systems.
- Produce regular pipeline, activity and sales performance reports.
- Attend sales, management and company meetings to review performance, discuss opportunities and contribute to business strategy.
- Ensure all sales activities are aligned with company objectives and commercial goals.
- Key Skills, Knowledge and Experience
- Demonstrable success in a Business Development, New Business Acquisition or Senior Sales role, with a proven ability to identify, develop and convert commercial opportunities into sustainable revenue growth
- Proven experience generating self‑sourced sales opportunities and converting prospects into customers.
- Strong experience managing the complete sales lifecycle.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and presentation skills.
- Ability to build relationships with senior stakeholders and decision‑makers.
- Commercially aware with a strong understanding of consultative selling techniques.
- Highly organised with excellent time management and pipeline management skills.
- Self‑motivated and capable of working independently whilst contributing effectively within a wider team.
- Experience analysing sales performance, pipeline metrics and revenue forecasts, with the ability to produce accurate reports and support commercial decision‑making.
- Experience leading, mentoring or managing sales and account management professionals.
- Ability to motivate teams, drive performance and support the achievement of commercial objectives.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word and Excel.
- Experience using CRM systems and sales reporting tools.
- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel throughout the UK.
- Performance Measures & Targets
The Business Development Manager will be accountable for achieving agreed commercial objectives, including:
- New business revenue targets.
- Gross profit targets.
- New customer acquisition targets.
- Sales pipeline value and progression targets.
- Prospecting and lead generation activity targets.
- Number of customer meetings and site visits completed.
- Proposal, quotation and tender submission activity.
- Conversion rates from lead to opportunity and opportunity to contract award.
- Forecast accuracy and CRM data management standards.
Performance will be reviewed against agreed KPIs and commercial objectives, with a strong emphasis on pipeline generation, sales activity and revenue growth.
This role carries individual sales and revenue targets and requires a proactive approach to developing new business opportunities.
The successful candidate will be expected to generate their own pipeline, consistently achieve activity KPIs and contribute directly to the company’s growth strategy.
- Leadership & Account Management
- Provide day‑to‑day leadership, guidance and support to the Account Management team.
- Monitor individual and team performance against agreed objectives and KPIs.
- Support the development of Account Managers through coaching, mentoring and regular performance reviews.
- Work collaboratively with the Account Management team to identify opportunities for account growth, retention and increased customer value.
- Ensure effective handover of new customers from the sales process into ongoing account management.
- Drive a culture of customer focus, continuous improvement and commercial awareness across the team.
- Assist in the implementation of sales and account management strategies to support business growth objectives.
- Contribute to resource planning, team development and succession planning activities.
- Preferred Experience
- Experience within the IT Asset Disposition (ITAD), WEEE, recycling, sustainability or related industries would be highly advantageous.
- Alternatively, candidates with a successful background in B2B sales, corporate business development or solution‑based selling.
- Experience engaging with senior leadership teams, procurement professionals and key decision‑makers within corporate environments.
- Experience operating within a fast‑paced, performance‑driven environment, managing multiple priorities while consistently delivering against commercial objectives and targets.
