This role ensures all testing is conducted accurately, efficiently, and in full compliance with industry standards, company procedures, and regulatory requirements. As the technical lead within the team, you will oversee technicians, provide guidance on testing procedures, ensure accurate reporting, and uphold quality standards—playing a key role in maintaining accreditation (e.g., UKAS) and supporting continuous improvement across materials testing processes.
Key Responsibilities

- Review, approve, and validate test reports and data before submission to clients or internal stakeholders.
- Monitor workload and resources, assigning tasks to ensure deadlines and service levels are met.
- Support training, mentoring, and competency assessments of junior staff and new technicians.
- Assist in maintaining laboratory quality systems, including UKAS accreditation, calibration, traceability, and documentation control.
- Conduct internal audits, risk assessments, and participate in external audits (e.g. UKAS, client QA visits).
- Ensure health, safety, and environmental compliance in all testing activities and promote a culture of safety awareness.
- Liaise with operational managers and clients to understand testing requirements and deliver high-quality service.
- Identify and implement improvements in processes, equipment, and systems.
- Ensure all work complies with health, safety, and environmental policies and procedures.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
- Relevant qualification in Construction Materials Testing or a related field (e.g. HNC/HND, NVQ Level 3, or equivalent experience).
- Strong experience in a materials testing role, ideally with supervisory or senior-level responsibilities.
- Sound knowledge of testing standards and methods (BS, EN, ASTM, ISO).
- Experience working in a UKAS-accredited laboratory (or similar accreditation) is highly desirable.
- Proficient in using testing equipment and tools for laboratory and field tests.
- Valid UK driving licence essential for site-based work.
- Strong technical and analytical skills.
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills.
- High level of organisation and time management.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong understanding of health & safety procedures in lab and site environments.
