Birmingham | Tier 1 Main Contractor | Excellent Training & Career Progression

Are you looking to build a serious career in Quantity Surveying with a major main contractor? We are recruiting for a Trainee / Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join the Birmingham commercial team of an established Tier 1 main contractor delivering significant construction projects across the Midlands. This is an excellent opportunity for somebody at the early stages of their Quantity Surveying career who wants exposure to large-scale, technically interesting construction projects while learning from an experienced commercial team. The role will be office-based from Birmingham, with regular exposure to live projects across the region.

The Opportunity

You'll work alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors, Senior Quantity Surveyors and Commercial Managers, supporting the commercial delivery of projects from procurement through construction and ultimately final account. Rather than being restricted to basic commercial administration, the aim will be to develop your understanding of the complete commercial lifecycle and gradually increase your responsibility as your knowledge and confidence grow. Projects can span a variety of sectors including industrial & logistics, commercial, residential, student accommodation, retail and major mixed-use developments.

What Will You Be Doing?

  • Subcontractor and supplier procurement
  • Preparing and issuing tender enquiries
  • Analysing subcontractor quotations
  • Preparing valuations and applications
  • Subcontractor payments
  • Measurement and take-offs
  • Cost monitoring and reporting
  • Managing variations and change
  • Attending site and commercial meetings
  • Supporting monthly CVRs and forecasting
  • Contract administration
  • Maintaining commercial records
  • Assisting with final accounts
  • Working closely with Site, Design and Pre-Construction teams

You'll be given increasing responsibility as you develop, with the opportunity to eventually take commercial ownership of your own packages and projects.

Who Are We Looking For?

We're happy to consider candidates at Trainee or Assistant Quantity Surveyor level. You might be:

  • A Quantity Surveying graduate looking for your first major opportunity
  • Currently studying an HNC/HND or degree in Quantity Surveying
  • A Trainee QS already working within construction
  • An Assistant QS looking to move into a larger main contracting environment
  • Working for a subcontractor and looking to develop your career with a main contractor

Some previous construction experience would be advantageous, but attitude, ambition and willingness to learn are equally important. You'll need good numerical skills, attention to detail and the confidence to communicate with subcontractors, suppliers and colleagues.

Why Consider This Role?

For someone at the beginning of their career, the contractor you learn with can make a huge difference. This opportunity gives you the chance to develop within an established Tier 1/main contracting environment, working alongside experienced commercial professionals and gaining exposure to substantial projects. We're looking for somebody who doesn't simply want their next job – we're looking for someone who wants to become a Quantity Surveyor, Senior Quantity Surveyor and potentially a future Commercial Manager. There is a genuine opportunity to learn, develop and build a long-term career within the business.

Location

Birmingham office, with travel to projects across the Midlands as required. A driving licence would therefore be advantageous.

Interested?

If you're a Trainee Quantity Surveyor, Assistant Quantity Surveyor, Quantity Surveying graduate or currently studying towards a relevant construction qualification, we would love to hear from you.
