We’re looking for a Technical Lead who’s a genuine do‑er, someone who codes, builds and solves problems while happy leading a small team of two Staff Engineers. This isn’t an oversight role; it’s a hands‑on engineering leadership position at the centre of modernising RWS’s platforms and building new SaaS, AI‑enabled capabilities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and build a new Protect engineering team from the ground up, shaping ways of working, tooling and delivery culture through hands on example.
- Stay deeply hands‑on, contributing to architecture, design reviews and writing code where it drives progress.
- Drive real adoption of AI development tools and agentic workflows by using them yourself and embedding them into daily engineering practice.
- Set technical direction while actively helping the team deliver modernisation work with pragmatic, real‑world engineering decisions.
- Own delivery end‑to‑end, planning, prioritising and unblocking work to keep momentum high.
- Embed DevSecOps by doing, championing a “you build it, you run it” model through hands‑on operational ownership.
- Partner closely with product and domain experts to turn complex IP workflows into simple, scalable engineering solutions.
- Establish modern engineering practices such as CI/CD, automated testing, observability and secure deployment pipelines.
- Create a high performance environment through clear expectations, coaching and day to day technical leadership.
- Build domain understanding around patent lifecycle workflows and IP data structures to make strong technical decisions.
- Represent Protect engineering across the wider organisation, contributing to standards and cross‑team initiatives.
Skills & Experience
- Strong software engineering background with progression into engineering management.
- Comfort staying close to code and architecture, you enjoy building, not just directing.
- Experience across multiple stacks (TypeScript, Java, .NET) and willingness to dive into unfamiliar tech.
- Hands‑on use of AI development tools and curiosity about agentic workflows reshaping engineering.
- Cloud‑native engineering experience, ideally with AWS.
- Strong understanding of containers and modern deployment practices.
- DevSecOps mindset with real experience embedding security, observability and operational ownership.
- Track record of shipping complex products or platforms in fast‑moving environments.
- Ability to balance strategy with hands‑on execution- you think long‑term but deliver daily.
- Excellent communication skills across technical and business audiences.
