RWE Renewables UK Management Ltd. is offering the opportunity for motivated people to begin a career in renewable energy with us. This 3‑year apprenticeship scheme will enable the selected candidates to develop as technicians working on wind turbines.

The first two years will be classroom based at IPS International training facility in Rochester. The third year will consist of on‑site training at an operational windfarm in the UK.

About the role:

We will provide a comprehensive and well-supported learning programme including classroom-based learning and experience on site working with our technicians. On completion of the apprenticeship, you will receive an NVQ Level 3 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing and Engineering (Mechatronics Maintenance Technician).

Our Wind Turbine Technicians work as part of a small team focused on specific offshore wind farms. Candidates selected for the role will learn to carry out all aspects of wind turbine maintenance including scheduled, unscheduled, proactive, and troubleshooting maintenance on wind turbines. Your hard work will ensure our wind farms continue to deliver power to households and businesses. It is a rewarding job that allows you to work on highly advanced machinery in a challenging environment.

Once trained you will be working at sea, in all weathers and at height, using heavy, complex mechanical and electrical equipment. You will be required to demonstrate a commitment to Health and Safety in all aspects of your work.

Initially the focus will be upon learning and developing engineering knowledge through education and training. However, examples of the tasks covered as Technicians in the longer term include:

  • Electro/Mechanical problem solving of wind turbines working in small teams at height in remote locations with user manuals as reference.
  • Working with advanced mechanical, hydraulic and electrical equipment in a safe manner.
  • Planning in advance the tools, spares and materials required for each job to be completed.
  • Fault finding and diagnosis of wind turbine main component condition to assist in determining if site repair is possible or whether the unit requires exchange.
  • Ongoing development to become a multi‑skilled technician that will cover all aspects of inspection, maintenance and repair of the wind turbines.

Candidate Requirements:

You will be keen to learn and undertake a practical role. Additionally, due to the high complexity of the role it may mean standby or on‑call may be required. You will be part of a team that will perform services from the Service Operation Vessel (SOV) working 14 days on, 14 days off rotation.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • 5 GCSE’s (or equivalent) at 4/C or above including Science, Maths and English.
  • Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Willing to learn and develop.
  • Interest in engineering.
  • Able to work at height.
  • Able to work at sea.
  • Willing to work shifts, staying for up to 2 weeks on a SOV.

All apprentices will be expected to study full time for the first 2 years at IPS International, Rochester, before being deployed at an operational wind farm in the UK for the 3rd year for practical experience of working on a wind farm. Accommodation will be provided, along with travel expenses for two journeys per month between the Norfolk area and the term time address.
