RWE develops and constructs renewable energy projects around the world, and owns and operates offshore wind farm projects throughout Europe representing a total of 2.4 GW. RWE is therefore uniquely positioned to advance the energy transition and to play a leading role in the sector at an international level.

The company is seeking a Grid Integration and System Studies Engineer to assist in progressing offshore wind projects towards construction. The role will be based in Swindon, Coventry or London or any UK Offshore Site Office, with potential work at contractor locations and some travel both nationally and internationally as required by business needs.

Responsibilities

  • Work in construction or development phases of offshore wind farm projects, ensuring a robust and optimised through-life design of the electrical system supporting all aspects of generation and transmission up to the grid interface point.
  • Advise projects on electrical system behaviour, grid code compliance and grid connection processes.
  • Act as the project's grid integration and system studies technical specialist for discussions with OEMs and EPC contractors providing HVAC or HVDC offshore transmission solutions.
  • Manage and coordinate grid connection processes, organising all relevant technical documentation, test reports, and certifications.
  • Oversee design/prequalification for packages of offshore wind farms and components, performing audits and technical due diligence.
  • Create simulation models for electrical systems, perform load flow and short circuit calculations, analyse dynamic stability and harmonics stability, and develop protection concepts.
  • Plan and coordinate internal and external resources for technical due diligence projects (e.g. M&A), analyse simulation results, technical solutions and risks, and make proposals for technical and commercial decisions.
  • Analyse electrical system behaviour and grid code compliance for projects and existing plants.
  • Collaborate with technical experts in Offshore Engineering's EC&I Department and Grid Integration & Studies Engineers to ensure knowledge is effectively utilised on the project.

Qualifications

  • University degree or comparable education ideally in electrical power engineering.
  • Fluent English speaking and writing.
  • Experience in system studies of offshore wind or similar large HV transmission projects.
  • Experience of the grid connection process and Grid Code in the UK, ideally dealing with NESO and NGET.
  • Knowledge of software such as MS Office, DigSilent PowerFactory and PSCAD for load flow, short circuit, protection, RMS and EMT simulations.
  • Knowledge of electrical plant including large power transformers, switchgear, onshore transmission substations, converter systems, static and dynamic reactive power compensation solutions, HV/MV cable systems.
  • Appreciation of CDM roles and responsibilities.
  • Solid communication and coordination skills; highly motivated and resourceful.
  • Broad knowledge of relevant guidelines, norms, standards and best practice.

Advantageous, But Not Essential

  • Chartership in an Engineering discipline and membership of a recognised professional body.
  • Renewable energy/offshore wind farm experience.
  • Demonstrable experience of working effectively in an international business.
  • Valid driving licence.
