The RWE Engineering OT (Operational Technology) Technician Apprenticeship programme provides a valuable opportunity to enter the world of engineering, earn while learning and training to become an OT Security Technician for today and tomorrow. As an OT Technician you have the unique opportunity to deliver practical work while maintaining technical specialism in a rapidly growing industry.
Key ResponsibilitiesOT Technicians are an essential part of our power generation business, maintaining cyber security at our assets and compliance to our regulators. During your programme you will practice your skills by working in both the operations and maintenance teams on one of our CCGT power stations, you will put into practice learning in your core subject of:
- Vulnerability management
- Network security
- Control and Instrument Engineering
Along with many other skills you learn along your journey. All of our core subjects ensure the RWE fleet maintains high standards of security and compliance, supporting the UK’s energy reliability through careful engineering and maintenance strategies.
In addition to applying your skills in the maintenance team you will spend time developing your knowledge on shift in Power Station Operations, learning the skill sets needed to develop you towards the role of an OT or DCS Technician. These include day to day operations, control system maintenance, secure delivery of new projects and commercial decisions, all key elements of the ever-changing world we live in.
Spread over three years your development will include specialist technical and practical skills training in the following areas alongside your specialist area of development:
- Behavioural
- Health & Safety
- Commercial
Our programme offers a structured combination of academic learning, technical training and practical skills development, supported by experienced engineers, technicians and training specialists.
Overview of the 3 year programmeYear 1: 90% of time will be spent with our apprenticeship training provider learning core skills and completing an HNC in engineering.
Year 2 & 3: 70% of time will be spent on your allocated site applying your new skills, whilst further enhancing your technical knowledge. The remaining time will be spent at an RWE training facility & Specialist providers completing bespoke training courses in areas such as Network Management & Security, Cyber Security Concepts, Treat & Vulnerability Mitigation and many more skills. Whilst away from home location, RWE will provide accommodation, travel and food allowance, ensuring reliable pastoral support throughout.
On completion of your three-year programme you will receive the following:
- Higher National Certificate in Operations Engineering – General Engineering (HNC)
- Performing Engineering Operations – BTEC L2 Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Engineering (Foundation Skills)
- Level 4 Cyber Security Technologist
- CompTia Network +, Security +

We seek apprentices who show solid problem-solving capabilities, an openness to ongoing learning, and a collaborative working style. Academically to be considered for our programme you are required to have or be predicted to have:
- BTEC Diploma in Engineering or 2 A Levels (one to be science, mathematics or engineering) or equivalent qualification + 5 GCSE’s (English & mathematics at grade C or 4) or equivalent qualifications.
- Well-developed analytical and problem solving skills.
- Motivation to expand and refine your engineering skills and a solid interest in the energy industry.
- Someone who collaborates well with others and has good communication skills.
- High travel flexibility.
- Resourceful and motivated individuals who show initiative and thrive in team-based environments.
