Department: Marketing & Business Development

The firm:

It's an exciting time to join Russell-Cooke, a top 100 UK law firm, crowned Independent Firm of the Year by the Lawyer and Outstanding Corporate Culture Award at the British Legal Awards. We act for household name clients ranging from Pret a Manger to Sky UK and Unicef, iconic London landmarks such as Borough Market and Alexandra Palace, and communities such as Grenfell. Our specialists are leaders in their fields, repeatedly recognised in the legal directories by peers and clients. Our strong connection with London and our local communities is reflected in our clients, our partnerships, and in our enduring commitment to social justice.

Our current strategic plan anticipates that our growth will continue in a consistent upward trajectory, and core to this will be business development and client service. We have identified a need for greater BD capability and have created a number of new positions to meet that need. A new Director of Marketing and Business Development was put in place in October 2023 and Head of BD in January 2024. BD is becoming a routine consideration in how our lawyers plan and win their business. The head of BD also takes responsibility for our events provision.

The Role:

We are looking for an energetic, organised, and enthusiastic Business Development (BD) Executive to join us in a role within the business development arm of our Marketing and Business Development team. Based in our Putney office, but with the opportunity to work across all of our three offices, the role will provide a high degree of visibility for the successful candidate and will involve working closely and collaboratively with senior stakeholders and lawyers across the firm.

The successful candidate will have some marketing and/or business development experience ideally gained within a professional services firm, although that is not essential. The role would be suitable for an experienced BD Assistant looking to step up, or an existing BD Executive who is looking for a new challenge in a specialist business development role at a firm where they can work across a number of key departments, helping shape their growth. Alternatively, you may be in a role in a related area such as research or marketing but interested in specialising in business development.

Reporting to the BD Manager, this role will also work closely with the head of BD to deliver the firm's BD activity and the team's key projects and objectives. This will involve elements of crossover and liaison with colleagues specialising in marketing activity.

Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Working closely with departments across the firm to implement BD and client/referrer relationship management best practice activities, and provide guidance on effective marketing and BD to reach identified target audiences.
  • Working with the BD Manager and Head of BD to support relevant departments and teams across the firm on tenders and work winning opportunities, helping create and ensure delivery and seeking feedback on outcomes.
  • Being a link between departments, spotting opportunities and facilitating progress around cross departmental and team collaboration.
  • Support on routine and opportunity focused firm-wide BD initiatives and projects for specific departments and involving collaboration with multiple departments at once.
  • Lead routine and opportunistic/pro-active research projects, aimed at targeting clients and providing an infrastructure for the firm and individuals/teams to win work.
  • Acting as a gateway between the lawyers and the wider marketing and business development team, helping the firm understand effective marketing and business development and who in the team supports on what.
  • To support on targeted events and mailings where needed, focused on reaching the right audiences in the right way and on event execution geared towards winning work.

Technical skills and expertise:

  • Experience working in or with a business development and marketing department, preferably within professional services.
  • Experience working on client facing documents, ideally proposals and work winning opportunities with clients.
  • Energy and an appetite for working with a range of stakeholders in different areas of the business.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Comfort with challenge, working towards being considered 'the expert' on BD and a point person to stakeholders across different levels of seniority around best practice and skills.
  • A team player, with an interest in all areas of marketing and business development.
  • Ambition, to come into a relatively new team and make a positive impact.

There is a requirement to work across our 3 offices in Holborn, Putney, and Kingston as required with this role, a minimum of 3 days a week. For the right candidate, there will be an opportunity for advancement in the firm.

We are an equal opportunities employer.

Salary and benefits:

We offer competitive salaries and generous benefits. For more information or to apply please follow the link on the portal. We welcome direct applications. If you would like any further information about the firm please contact a member of the HR team. We have a diverse workforce and aim to attract high calibre applicants that reflect the demography of our geographical location and client base.
