The Role
This is a fantastic opportunity to take on a broad and varied role. The work will include supporting charities to comply with legal and regulatory requirements and providing strategic advice as a trusted advisor. You will also help with setting up new charities, drafting and updating governing documents, advising on company and charity law, supporting charity mergers or incorporations, and providing guidance on trademarks and commercial contracts such as brand licenses and fundraising agreements. The role is genuinely diverse and would suit someone who is enthusiastic about expanding their expertise across a wide range of legal areas.
We are a close-knit and collaborative team. One of our three governance partners will be your supervisor, but you will work with all team members, including our specialist property, data protection and employment lawyers. You will have the opportunity to take ownership of projects, manage your own matters, and build your own client relationships.
Technical skills and expertise
The role would suit someone with 2-6+ years’ post-qualification experience, but we welcome applications from people from a range of backgrounds. This includes those returning from a career break, individuals with relevant in-house experience, and those who have come to the legal profession as a second career. While prior experience advising charities is preferred, it is not essential. What matters most is demonstrable interest in the charity sector, a proactive approach to learning, and a willingness to contribute to business development.
The team
Our team is recognised as one of the leading charity practices, and is consistently ranked highly in both The Legal 500 and Chambers UK. We advise a diverse range of clients – from some of the UK’s best-known charities, to dynamic start-up charities, philanthropists and corporate foundations. We have particular expertise in international work. The team comprises 17 lawyers and one trainee, all working exclusively with charities and not-for-profits organisations. Our lawyers bring specialist expertise across a wide spectrum of legal areas, including governance, commercial, property, intellectual property, data protection, employment and safeguarding.
Your career development
Russell-Cooke’s lawyers are rounded professional advisers with strong commercial awareness and a commitment to exceeding client expectations. All our lawyers benefit from our cohort-based career development programme. We understand the importance of building an internal network and have developed this excellent cohort programme to allow our lawyers to work together across practice areas and share their knowledge, experiences and networks. At each stage of your career, and as you move through the cohorts, a bespoke training programme will be provided to support you with your development and progression.
