About the Service

Aberavon Hospital provides rehabilitation and recovery for people with complex, severe and enduring mental health challenges. Referrals will be accepted from medium/low secure hospitals, PICU, acute admissions and the Criminal Justice System. Patients are detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. Rushcliffe Aberavon is an 18‑bed locked rehabilitation unit for males aged 18 to 65 with:

  • Primary diagnosis of mental illness or personality disorder, benefiting from treatment within a locked rehabilitation service
  • Co‑existing learning disabilities, challenging behaviour or substance misuse
  • History of disengagement from treatment services
  • Need for support preparing them to live independently in the community

Role Overview

As a Kitchen Assistant you will support the preparation, cooking and service of meals, ensuring all duties are carried out safely and in line with food hygiene and organisational standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with basic food preparation, including salads, sandwiches, and vegetable preparation, and support simple cooking tasks
  • Maintain high standards of cleanliness across the kitchen and dining areas, including washing up, cleaning surfaces and following cleaning schedules
  • Handle stock including receiving, checking, storing and rotating supplies to maintain appropriate stock levels and minimise waste
  • Assist in serving meals and collaborate with care teams to support a positive mealtime experience for service users

About You

You have a basic understanding of food hygiene and safe working practices, or are willing to learn. You are able to follow instructions, work as part of a team, and support others to maintain standards. You are reliable, organised, and able to work in a fast‑paced environment. You take pride in maintaining cleanliness and support a safe working environment, and you communicate clearly and understand the importance of your role within a care setting.
