An exciting opportunity has arisen to grow our Nursing Team and recruit an additional Healthcare Assistant working 12-18.5 hours per week (days/times to be agreed). The role would be a key part of our delivery of services to patients at the Practice, undertaking specific clinical duties, and working alongside our entire team.

Main duties of the job:

  • Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patients' needs.
  • Deliver clinical skills such as phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring, basic observations, wound care, ECGs, injections (under instruction from GPs), urine dipping, health checks and long-term condition checks.
  • Deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education.
  • Support call/recall of specific groups of patients including owning lists oneself.
  • Provide clinical support to the nursing team and other healthcare professionals within the Practice.
  • Act as a chaperone as required.
  • Provide support during minor operations as required.

About us:

Runnymede Medical Practice cares for 12,000 patients across two sites spanning the Berkshire / Surrey border. One site is located in Old Windsor and the other in Englefield Green. We are part of the Windsor Primary Care Network (PCN). We are a fully accredited training Practice and fully support the ongoing professional development and training of all of our staff. You would be joining our strong, friendly, supportive nursing team of two Practice Nurses, a Nurse Associate (who is undertaking her Student Nurse training), a Healthcare Assistant and a Phlebotomist. The nursing team work closely together and have regular meetings and shared education time. Our wider clinical team consists of 6 GPs, and a Paramedic Practitioner, alongside clinical colleagues employed by the PCN based in the Practice. We have a stable, supportive non-clinical team.

Job responsibilities:

The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks. This will be dependent upon factors such as workload and staffing levels:

  • Consult with patients and their families to undertake assessments of patient need.
  • Deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education.
  • Deliver clinical skills such as phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring, basic observations, wound care, ECGs, injections (under instruction from GPs), urine dipping, health checks and long-term condition checks.
  • Support call/recall of specific groups of patients including owning lists oneself.
  • Be an integral part of the Practice team.
  • Provide clinical support to registered nurses and other healthcare professionals within the organisation.
  • Deliver basic clinical care interventions under supervision, supporting continuity of care and patient safety initiatives.
  • Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation.
  • Provide support during minor operations as required.
  • Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the IPC Policy.
  • Work within national and local protocols.
  • Be aware of your duties and responsibilities regarding current legislation and adhere to Practice policies and procedures on Safeguarding Adults and Safeguarding Children.
  • Recognise the boundaries of their practice and know when and to whom patients should be referred.
  • Support in the delivery of enhanced services and other service requirements.
  • Support the administrative team on an as-required basis.
  • Undertake all mandatory training and induction programmes.
  • Contribute to and embrace the spectrum of clinical governance.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy, effective working area at all times.
  • Attend a formal appraisal with their manager at least every 12 months. Once a performance/training objective has been set, progress will be reviewed on a regular basis so that new objectives can be agreed.

Person Specification:

Clinical Knowledge and Skills:

  • Ability to undertake patient medicals including height, weight, BP, pulse and BMI.
  • Understanding of the principles of ECGs.
  • Wound care / removal of suture and staples.
  • Ability to undertake injections.
