Software Engineering Intern, Platform

The team you’ll join:

We’re looking for a curious, motivated, and positive Platform Engineering Intern to join our highly skilled platform engineering team. This role is designed for someone currently studying at university who wants hands-on experience building and operating real-world infrastructure and internal tooling at a fast-growing tech company. The platform engineering team at Runna is responsible for designing and maintaining scalable, secure infrastructure and building internal tools that empower Runna engineers to move quickly and efficiently.

As an intern, you’ll work closely with experienced platform and product engineers, learning how modern cloud platforms are built and operated while contributing meaningful work to the systems that power the #1 running app in the world. This is a learning-focused role with real responsibility. You’ll be supported through mentoring, pairing, and structured feedback, and you’ll leave with practical experience in cloud infrastructure, automation, and developer experience.

As a Platform Engineering Intern, you will:

• Work alongside platform engineers to help build, maintain, and improve our cloud infrastructure.
• Contribute to internal tooling that improves developer experience and engineering efficiency.
• Learn and apply infrastructure-as-code (IaC) practices to manage cloud resources safely and efficiently.
• Assist in developing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines to support automated deployments.
• Support product engineering teams by helping with platform-related improvements and investigations.
• Learn how we monitor, log, and observe our systems to ensure reliability and performance.
• Contribute to building internal tools and platform capabilities that enable engineers to self-serve.
• Take part in improving automation and operational processes to reduce manual work.
• Gain exposure to incident response, reliability practices, and how we design resilient systems.
• Take ownership of scoped projects with guidance and support from senior engineers.

What you’ll bring to the team:

• Currently pursuing a degree in a relevant field (e.g. Computer Science, Engineering, Maths) or equivalent experience.
• You’ve built things outside of coursework (personal projects, open source, hackathons, etc.) and enjoy learning by doing.
• A solid understanding of computing fundamentals, such as:
• How the internet works (HTTP, DNS, basic networking concepts).
• How applications run in production (deployment, scaling, reliability).
• Strong software engineering fundamentals (clean code, testing, debugging).
• A solid foundation in programming or scripting (e.g. Python, TypeScript, Go, Java or similar).
• Basic understanding of cloud concepts (compute, networking, storage, security).
• Familiarity with Git and modern development workflows.
• An interest in automation, infrastructure, and how software systems run in production.
• Willingness to learn tools like Terraform, Docker, and CI/CD systems.
• Strong communication skills and a collaborative mindset.
• A proactive attitude and enthusiasm for learning from experienced engineers.

Bonus points if you have:

• Experience building or deploying something in a cloud environment (e.g. AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Experience with Terraform, CDK, or other IaC tools.
• Experience using Docker for local development or deployment.
• Knowledge of CI/CD best practices and experience with methodologies and tooling, such as GitHub Actions.
• Any exposure to logging, monitoring, alerting, or tracing.
• An interest or experience with health/fitness technologies.

Platform Engineer Internship Interview Process:

Our goal is to make the interview process as simple and enjoyable as possible. This process consists of the following stages:

• Kick off! Apply below (we review applications on a rolling basis and may close the role once we receive a high volume of applications, so we encourage you to apply as soon as possible).
• Once you have applied, you will receive an update on your application before the 10th of April.
• First interview: 25-minute live coding technical interview with our Engineers (This will consist of one exercise from https://leetcode.com/) and then a 10-minute interview with Josh, Talent Partner.
• Second interview: 25-minute chat with one of our Senior Engineers and CTO (This will consist of general tech and motivational questions).
• Once the process is finished, we promise to let you know our decision as soon as possible.
