Shape the Future of Clean Energy - Lead Risk Strategy Across a £0.5bn Programme
We are working with a pioneering organisation at the forefront of clean energy innovation. As they scale to meet the demands of one of the UK's most ambitious nuclear fusion programmes, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Risk & Dependencies Manager to join the Programme & Project Management Office (PMO) at the heart of a multi-disciplinary, multi-partner delivery environment.
This high-impact role will be central to building consistency and excellence in risk and dependencies management across a national portfolio of science, engineering, and infrastructure projects - ranging in value from under £50k to over £500M.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Risk Leadership
- Develop and implement consistent risk management strategies aligned to ISO 31000 and Government Functional Standards
- Facilitate regular risk identification and assessment workshops across projects and programmes
- Oversee risk register quality, traceability, and escalation processes
- Lead risk reporting to programme boards, senior leadership, and external governance bodies
- Collaborate with internal audit, assurance, and controls functions to maintain compliance and enhance transparency
- Identify and manage interdependencies across programmes, workstreams, and partner organisations
- Align risks and dependencies with delivery milestones and critical paths to avoid cascading impacts
- Collaborate with the planning and project controls functions to integrate risk into schedule and cost planning
- Provide clear, actionable reporting to programme boards and executive teams
- Serve as an independent reviewer of project risk health on behalf of senior leadership
- Contribute to audits, process effectiveness reviews, and assurance strategy
- Support and mentor delivery teams, embedding a risk-aware culture across the organisation
- Line manage and develop a matrixed team of risk professionals and contract staff
- Deliver training to build organisational capability in risk and dependency management
- Define and deliver the risk function's future capacity, recruitment, and skills roadmap
What We're Looking For
Essential Skills & Experience:
- Proven experience in risk management within complex project or programme environments (5+ years)
- Strong knowledge of risk frameworks (ISO 31000, APM Risk, MOR)
- Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder engagement skills
- Experience managing risk across large infrastructure, science, or engineering programmes
- Familiarity with risk tools such as Active Risk Manager (ARM), Predict!, Jira, or PIMS
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline (Engineering, Business, Project Management)
- Professional risk qualification (e.g., APM Risk Level 2, MOR Practitioner)
Desirable:
- Project Management qualifications (e.g., APM PMQ, PRINCE2)
- Experience working within regulated, government, or energy sectors
- Functional leadership experience within a PMO or controls organisation
- Membership of a relevant professional body (APM, PMI, IRM)
