The General Practice Assistant position is designed to support our GPs and the smooth running of clinics by predominantly covering administrative tasks and, if needed, some basic clinical duties, to ensure the best use of consultation time and improve the patient experience. Rugby Health PCN is looking for a motivated and compassionate General Practice Assistant to cover maternity leave for a 10 month period. Applicants must be fully qualified as a GPA and hold the Skills Certificate qualification. The successful candidate will demonstrate strong IT skills and provide excellent customer service. The postholder will be part of the Practice team based at Clifton Road Surgery, one of our 12 network practices and will report to the Practice Manager. This is a fixed term 10-month position for between 25‑37.5 hours per week starting in August/September 2026 (however this is flexible). Desired hours can be discussed at interview. The position requires an enhanced DBS check. Candidates should have a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle as flexibility is required to be mobile across our network if required. Interviews will take place towards the end of May.
Main duties of the job
- This is primarily an administrative role and duties may include:
- Arranging appointments, referrals, tests and follow‑up appointments of patients for example: Sorting clinical post and prioritising for the GP.
- Signposting some post to other members of staff; and extracting information from clinical letters that needs coding; adding this to patient notes.
- Completing basic (non‑opinion) forms and core elements of some forms for the GP to approve and sign such as insurance forms, mortgage, and benefits agency forms etc.
- Explaining treatment procedures to patients.
- Helping the GP liaise with outside agencies e.g., getting an on‑call doctor on the phone to ask advice or arrange admission while the GP can continue with their consultation(s);
- Supporting with QOF reviews.
While this position is mainly focused on administrative duties, there may on occasion be the requirement for some clinical duties.

Person Specification
- Qualifications: Grade A‑C in GCSE Maths and English, or equivalent (i.e L2 Functional Skills in English and Maths), GPA Certificate, Diploma in Health and Social Care or equivalent or Care Certificate.
- Knowledge and Skills: A good knowledge of primary care/community health/social care systems, ability to communicate effectively and professionally with both patients and colleagues, ability to work with confidential sensitive information and understand boundaries, competent and confident in the use of Microsoft Office applications, awareness of medical terminology, ability to think on feet, knowledge of referral processes within primary care, knowledge of clinical coding.
- Experience: Experience in General Practice/Primary Care or Healthcare setting, administrative experience and good organisational skills, experience of handling data with a high level of accuracy, competence in full Health Care Assistant duties, experience in using EMIS, experience of carrying out ECGs, phlebotomy and lifestyle checks.
- Personal Attributes: Demonstrates values and behaviours that promote collaborative working, able to apply confidentiality, tact and diplomacy in conducting the duties required of this role, able to operate independently, can manage a workload effectively, willing to work in the best interest of the patient, compassionate and positive attitude.
