Drafty AI turns 3D CAD models into production-ready 2D manufacturing drawings. We are SOLIDWORKS-native and process everything in-tool, so a customer's geometry never leaves their machine. Our engine pairs a deterministic rules layer with machine learning to produce release-ready drawings, flat patterns, bills of materials and exports, and to flag only the drawings that genuinely need a person.
You will own the layer where our software meets the CAD system. You will build and extend our SOLIDWORKS add-in, drive the CAD API integration, and turn a 3D model into a fully dimensioned, standards-compliant 2D drawing package, programmatically. You will work closely with our rules and ML engineers to decide what the automation does on its own and where a human is still needed. This is a hands-on, high-ownership role. What you build is the product.
What you'll do
- Build and maintain our SOLIDWORKS add-in and automation engine using the SOLIDWORKS API.
- Programmatically create drawing views, dimensions, annotations, title blocks, BOMs and balloons from 3D parts and assemblies.
- Automate sheet-metal outputs: flat patterns, bend tables, and DXF, DWG and PDF exports.
- Encode drawing standards and company conventions (ASME Y14 and ISO) as reliable, testable rules.
- Work with the ML team to combine deterministic logic with model-driven decisions, and to route exceptions cleanly.
- Extend support over time to further CAD systems such as AutoCAD and Inventor.
- Keep the code robust and well tested. It runs inside a customer's live CAD environment, so reliability is not optional.
What we're looking for
- Hands-on experience building on the SOLIDWORKS API (add-ins, or serious macro and automation work), or a comparable CAD API such as AutoCAD .NET / ObjectARX, Autodesk Inventor, Creo Toolkit or Solid Edge.
- Strong C# and .NET, the primary stack for SOLIDWORKS add-ins. VB.NET or C++ experience is also welcome.
- A real understanding of manufacturing drawings: drawing views, dimensioning, tolerances and GD&T, sheet metal, BOMs, and drawing standards.
- The ability to automate drawing creation end to end, from model to released output.
- Sound software engineering habits: version control, testing, and clean, maintainable code.
Nice to have
- More than one CAD API, for example SOLIDWORKS alongside AutoCAD or Inventor.
- Geometry processing, feature recognition or computational geometry.
- Exposure to Python and to working alongside ML engineers, since our engine is hybrid rules and ML.
- Experience shipping a commercial CAD add-in, or with the SOLIDWORKS partner and certification ecosystem.
- A background in mechanical, manufacturing or fabrication engineering, especially sheet metal and weldments.
- Comfort in an early-stage, zero-to-one environment.
