Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for an Electrical Estimator on a 6 Month Contract, based in Staffordshire.
Role Summary
You will take ownership of the estimating function, preparing competitive tenders for high-voltage transmission and distribution projects and playing a key role in shaping the commercial strategy of the division. The client has a strong pipeline of work and existing relationships with major network operators, including National Grid.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare detailed cost estimates and tender submissions for HV/EHV transmission and distribution projects, including overhead lines, underground cabling, substations, and switchgear.
- Interpret specifications, drawings, and scope documents to develop accurate pricing strategies and bills of quantities.
- Engage the supply chain – subcontractors, material suppliers, and specialist vendors – to obtain competitive quotations.
- Liaise with engineering and commercial teams to ensure estimates reflect technical and programme requirements.
- Identify and price risk appropriately throughout the tender process.
- Lead post-tender negotiations and clarification meetings with National Grid, DNOs, and other network operators.
- Establish and develop estimating databases, rate libraries, and benchmarking tools for the division.
- Provide commercial leadership and contribute to the strategic growth of the T&D business in the UK.
Requirements
Essential Experience & Qualifications
- Proven track record as an Electrical Estimator within the UK transmission and/or distribution sector.
- Demonstrable experience on National Grid projects – directly or via a principal contractor or specialist subcontractor.
- Strong understanding of HV/EHV electrical infrastructure including OHL, cable, substation, and protection & control systems.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and contract documentation.
- Commercially astute with working knowledge of NEC, IChemE, or similar contract forms used in the UK utilities sector.
- Proficient in estimating software and Microsoft Office.
- Strong numeracy and attention to detail.
Desirable
- Experience across multiple voltage levels (33kV, 132kV, 275kV, 400kV).
- Familiarity with NGED, SSEN, SP Energy Networks, or other DNO/TO frameworks.
- HNC/HND or degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- CSCS, SMSTS, or IOSH qualifications.
