Rubicon Consulting is currently recruiting for OHL Design Engineer on a 6 Month Rolling Contract, based in UK Wide.
Our client delivers high-profile design and engineering services for National Grid, SSEN Transmission, and DNO clients, with active project commitments including major 400kV/132kV substation and overhead line programmes across the UK. This role sits within their growing Power & Energy team and will contribute directly to transmission-scale OHL design projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Undertake detailed OHL design across 132kV–400kV voltage levels, including line routing, sag-tension calculations, conductor selection, and structure analysis.
- Produce clearance reports, design drawings, and technical documentation in line with National Grid and DNO standards.
- Use PLS-CADD and associated tools (PLS-Tower, PLS-Pole) as primary design software throughout the project lifecycle.
- Prepare and review engineering specifications, proposals, and design packages.
- Liaise with multidisciplinary teams covering substation, civils, and cable disciplines as required.
- Contribute to FEED and detailed design stages, supporting construction teams through technical queries and site-related design issues.
- Ensure designs comply with relevant standards including ENA, ENATS, and applicable TP documents.
Requirements
Essential
- Demonstrable OHL design experience at 132kV and above, ideally within UK transmission.
- Proficient in PLS-CADD – this is a non-negotiable requirement for this role.
- Strong working knowledge of sag-tension analysis, conductor selection, and clearance calculations.
- Familiarity with National Grid technical standards and DNO design processes.
- Degree qualified in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
- Ability to work independently within a consultancy environment and manage deliverables to program.
Desirable Requirements
- Experience with PLS-Tower and/or PLS-Pole for structure modelling.
- Exposure to HVDC or underground cable interface design.
- Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards IEng/CEng via IET or similar.
- Previous experience working within a consultancy or design-led organisation (as opposed to a construction contractor).
- Knowledge of ENATS 43-8 and related overhead line standards.
