Technician – Microbiology Laboratory

At Reading Scientific Services Ltd (RSSL) the Technician supports the Microbiology laboratory by performing routine analytical activities, laboratory administration, and housekeeping duties.

The role is based primarily at the Wokingham site and may require occasional attendance at other RSSL locations.

Working patterns will be aligned with the expectations of the specific position.

Responsibilities

  • Provide high‑quality customer service by effectively organising workload and ensuring the integrity of analytical data and accurate, timely results.
  • Perform basic routine tasks under the supervision of a senior staff member.
  • Operate basic laboratory equipment as directed.
  • Use laboratory software such as the LIMS system and Q‑Pulse.
  • Deliver routine training to new staff.
  • Conduct laboratory administration and housekeeping tasks.
  • Work in different laboratories when required by demand.

  • Collaborate with an efficient analytical team.
  • Quality, Environmental, Health & Safety (QEHS)
  • Adhere to safety and quality standards, including COSHH, risk assessments and SOPs.
  • Complete assigned quality actions promptly.
  • Maintain a clean, tidy and safe working environment.
  • Comply with GMP and UKAS requirements.
  • Ensure training records remain accurate.
  • Knowledge, Skills, Experience & Language Requirements
  • Education to A‑Level or HNC in a relevant scientific discipline.
  • Accountable, honest, hardworking, and able to work efficiently in a team.
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to follow written instructions.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self‑motivated, enthusiastic and quick to learn.
  • Well organized and capable of handling multiple concurrent activities.
  • Computer literate in standard MS Office applications.
  • Basic scientific understanding of laboratory equipment.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken).
