We are committed to developing the next generation of Makers and Bakers. This apprenticeship offers an early career experience in a fast‑paced and ever‑changing environment, enabling you to learn, grow, and step outside your comfort zone.

Who are we looking for? We want highly motivated people with a real passion for science and a determined attitude to learning. No prior experience is required—we’ll provide all the training you need. You should be able to work well in a team as well as independently and have excellent communication skills.

What will you do? The Laboratory Scientist role is a 4‑year programme that balances work with learning. You will work toward a BSc Chemical Science degree with Manchester Metropolitan University. Study will occur once a week online, with a residential week once a year. For the first 24 months you’ll rotate through different departments to learn their specialisms, then join a specific department to further develop your skills. You may use 20% of your time for studies—one day a week or saved for revision and exams.

Where will you be based and when will you start? You will be based at one of our four sites: Reading Science Centre, JJT and Knight Building (University of Reading campus), or a location in Wokingham. Interviews begin May 2026, and the apprenticeship starts September 2026.

Entry Criteria

  • 104 UCAS points at A‑Level (grade BCC), including chemistry or an equivalent scientific discipline.
  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grades 9‑5, including Science, Maths and English Language.
  • Apply and be accepted into the university course after an offer has been made by RSSL.
  • Applicants who do not meet these requirements but have relevant workplace experience or equivalent qualifications (e.g. T‑levels or BTEC diploma/extended diploma in a scientific discipline) will also be evaluated.

Travel Requirements / Work Schedule Travel to the university site during block release and for other agreed activities may be required.
