What we are looking for
Our national Innovation Reliefs team works with a wide range of companies, from start-ups to multinationals, supporting them with the preparation of Research and Development tax relief claims and helping you expand your capabilities and grow professionally. An exciting opportunity to join a growing, specialist Innovation Reliefs tax team operating nationally, with flexible working arrangements. The role involves working directly with IT specialists across a wide range of businesses at the forefront of their technology, while gaining experience within a global professional services firm.
You’ll make an impact by:
- Engaging with clients’ technical stakeholders across a range of industries, leveraging your knowledge of software and digital technologies to develop a clear understanding of the technological aspects of their R&D projects, with support from senior colleagues.
- Producing clear, high-quality technical narratives that provide the technical justification for software R&D claims, in line with HMRC requirements.
- Contributing technical input and subject-matter insight to software-focused R&D projects, under the guidance of senior colleagues.
- Keeping up to date with trends in software development, digital technologies and emerging tech across multiple sectors (e.g. fintech, healthtech, SaaS, e-commerce and data/AI platforms).
- Contributing to the development and refinement of technical methodologies used in preparing R&D claims, supporting consistency and quality across engagements.
- Applying relevant HMRC guidance and DSIT definitions to help identify eligible software R&D activities for tax relief, with guidance and support from senior colleagues.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues from different disciplines to support the delivery of R&D claims to time and quality standards.
- Supporting the project teams by contributing to updates on milestones, risks, issues and project progress.
- Leveraging digital tools, including approved AI where appropriate, to support research, analysis and documentation in line with firm policies and client confidentiality requirements.
Qualifications
- A degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline (or a relevant postgraduate qualification). Equivalent, relevant work experience may also be considered.
- Prior research or practical experience gained through academic study, software development projects or roles is advantageous.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and produce high-quality written outputs.
- Good organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to manage your own workload and meet deadlines.
- Some experience of working with clients or stakeholders (e.g. through placements, internships, projects or work experience) is beneficial.
- Strong teamwork skills, with a desire to work collaboratively with colleagues from different disciplines, both locally and nationally.
- A genuine interest in software development, digital technologies and innovation, and curiosity about how R&D tax relief supports innovation.
- Willingness to learn, take on feedback and develop technical and consulting skills in a professional services environment.
