What\’s the job about?
Our Clients use sources of ionising radiation (like radioactive material and x-rays) and non-ionising radiation (such as lasers) in their work. Radiation Protection Advisers (RPAs) and Laser Protection Advisers (LPAs) are qualified and experienced legal consultants who provide advice to help their Clients comply with the law.
As a trainee RPA/LPA, you\’ll be working with experienced staff by visiting Clients and providing advice and support. We appreciate that you\’ll need support and training, and we\’re committed to provide that. So, if you like meeting new people and have excellent communication skills, you\’ll fit right in.
We also provide training courses to Clients, so being confident in presenting to others is a skill we value. We\’ve been busy the last few years developing our training services, especially On Demand Training, it\’s been fun making training videos and animations, this is another thing we\’d like you to be involved in.
Because of the nature of the type of consultancy we provide, a background in science is really useful as you\’ll often be using analytical skills to tackle complex problems and coming up with solutions. Therefore, a science based degree would come in handy! We also don\’t expect you to have any previous experience in working with radiation protection. We especially welcome graduates or those who are embarking upon a new chapter in their career.
In addition to consultancy work, we would like to involve you in site based projects. This is where you support our Team of Site Managers in radiological monitoring of facilities. You\’ll get to use state of the art radiation detection equipment as well as learning key techniques in our laboratory.
Aurora is always looking for ways to improve our capabilities which is why we have invest in R&D projects. You\’ll get a chance to help us with these projects. That could be looking at new techniques for detecting radiation or finding ways of speeding up the processing of results. There\’s no such thing as a silly idea, so if you\’re someone who enjoys putting ideas forward, please don\’t hold them back.

How would it work for you?
- Our main office is near Harwell in Oxfordshire, which is where you will be based, but we do offer flexible working arrangements.
- Travelling is part of the role so you\’ll need a full UK driving license.
- We would commit to your training as an RPA and LPA, so that would include arranging for your attendance on professional training courses. This would include sponsoring you to complete the Certificate of Professional Development in Radiation Protection at the University of Strathclyde as well as the Laser Safety Management Course at Loughborough University.
- We would support your development at every stage so that you gain the necessary knowledge and practical competencies so that in time you can submit applications to become qualified as an RPA and LPA.
- We also will support you in developing other skills such as commercial and sales training, presentation skills, written, time and project management.
- Salary would be in the range of £28k to £35k (depending on experience). You\’d also receive private healthcare after a year of service. We have a bonus scheme so that if the Company does well, so do you. We offer a comprehensive package, including life cover.
What would be my responsibilities?
The work of the Trainee RPA/LPA will involve:
- providing advice and information to Clients on all aspects of radiation safety and the interpretation and application of relevant legislation, standards and guidance. Initially by shadowing experienced staff and then gradually taking the lead;
- producing quality radiation protection advisory reports which help Clients understand what they need to do to comply;
- provide radiation protection training courses in the form of presentations, initially under the supervision of experienced staff;
- helping to developing Aurora\’s Training services which will involve working with the Training Team to come up with innovative ideas on how to deliver training to Clients;
- support experienced Site Based staff in conducting radiological surveys using radiation detection instrumentation and then developing strategies to remediate areas; and
- Conduct R&D related activities with other staff to develop radiation detection capabilities.
