ADAS ALM, a member of RSK Group Ltd, is looking to recruit a motivated and ambitious livestock systems specialist to cover North Wales and further afield, to deliver and expand our range of consultancy projects. The role would involve working within our well-established livestock consultancy group and would involve flexible hybrid home & office working, with support from our Aberystwyth office. You will be involved in various projects across all our business sectors. The key criteria are that you have a genuine curiosity and willingness to learn, and an interest in working in the livestock and environmental sectors. We therefore require dedicated and enthusiastic staff with excellent communication skills. Projects are primarily located in Wales/the Borders, with the opportunity to work in other parts of the UK as projects develop. Therefore, a willingness to travel is essential.

The successful candidate will work as part of a group of livestock consultants, covering ruminant and poultry work. The role will mainly concentrate on ruminant consultancy, across projects with farmers and wider stakeholders including government and the supply chain. Supporting the industry to adapt to policy changes, the sustainability agenda and implementing innovation to improve productivity will be a focus.

Within the role, there will be immediate involvement in gathering information and drafting reports. This is likely to include some visits to farms and other premises in support of our current consultancy projects. A good understanding of Welsh and English agriculture policy and funding opportunities for the sector is also important, as well as the application of such at a farm level. Preference will be given to applicants with several years of experience in the industry, based in North Wales, with competent Welsh language communication skills. Full training will be given according to experience. Training may be from external bodies and/or from our own dedicated and experienced staff, as ADAS has developed many of the key standards adopted in the industry.

Key responsibilities

  • The successful candidate will work with a wide range of farming and corporate businesses, retailers, representative organisations and government bodies.
  • The emphasis will be on good communication and organisational skills, preparation of high-quality written material, handling data and being able to present information to clients and groups.
  • Over time, the consultant would be expected to prepare bids for new livestock consultancy projects and to identify opportunities for new business, individually or as part of a group.

Person specification

  • Degree or a postgraduate qualification relevant to livestock, or a related degree (e.g. in another science subject) with relevant practical experience.
  • Demonstrate excellent report writing skills using MS Word, and data handling using MS Excel.
  • Willingness and ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Understand and communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing.
  • Good computer literacy with the ability to use the full suite of Microsoft office programmes.
  • Full driving licence and own transport.
  • Flexibility in the range of work undertaken.

Other desirable attributes

  • An understanding of livestock production systems in the UK.
  • A broad appreciation of the issues facing the UK livestock sector and the changes likely to occur in the future.
  • Skills in using social media for marketing purposes and mobile application development for farm data management are desirable.
  • The ability to communicate in Welsh would be a significant advantage.
  • Good networking skills.

Salary and benefits

  • Up to £35,000 and negotiable depending on experience.
  • Contributory Pension Scheme and Life Assurance.
  • Flexible benefits programme with the option to buy additional holidays and discounted gym membership.
  • A private healthcare scheme and access to mental health support.
  • A wide range of training opportunities available.
  • A friendly and supportive working environment, designed to help you to develop and progress.
  • We encourage Continuing Professional Development.
