Team Leader – Geotechnical site testing & Environmental Monitoring

Location: Scotland, UK

The Vacancy

Structural Soils, part of the RSK Group, is looking for an experienced and ambitious Team Leader to help grow the Geotechnical site testing team in Scotland, UK.

The Role:

The successful candidate will spend most of their time office/yard based, planning logistics, organizing equipment, maintaining calibration and training records, checking results, and liaising with team members and clients. Some work will be on-site, with travel around Scotland and the North of England. Early starts and overnight stays may be required. A full UK driving license is essential, and a B+E towing license is advantageous.

The company has a diverse portfolio, including sectors like rail, transport, water, property, and nuclear. Notable projects include investigations at Hinckley Point and Wylfa, which have advanced our technical and reporting standards. Duties will include:

  • Engaging with clients daily on-site.
  • Managing team workloads and planning cost-effective site visits.
  • Maintaining UKAS accreditation, calibrations, and training.
  • Collaborating with other departments to meet project deadlines.

Supervising training of geotechnical technicians in testing and monitoring techniques such as:

  • Plate Load, Insitu CBR, Nuclear density gauge, soakaway/percolation testing.
  • Environmental monitoring (water, gas, leachate, air, soil).
  • Sampling of gases, soils, and water.
  • Continuous monitoring methods.
  • Hydrogeological tests like Variable Head, Constant Flow, Pneumatic Slug Tests.
  • Telemetry and datalogging equipment installation and maintenance.
  • Soil and geo-environmental logging, sampling, and lab scheduling.

The role involves travel mainly within Scotland, with occasional national travel, including staying away during weekdays.

Duties – Solo site visits:

  • Operating field equipment and conducting testing/sampling.
  • Accurately managing and submitting field notes.
  • Maintaining equipment and vehicles.
  • Liaising with clients, contractors, and the public.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • UK Clean Driving License (Essential).
  • 2-3 years\’ experience in relevant testing, or similar experience.
  • CSCS card.
  • Good time management, flexibility, teamwork, patience, and attention to detail.
  • Computer literacy and technical equipment proficiency.
  • Ability to work outdoors in all seasons and independently on-site.
  • Willingness to travel across the UK as needed.
  • Flexible regarding out-of-hours and weekend work.
  • Degree in earth sciences, geography, geology, or related field.
  • SSSTS or SMSTS certification.

Salary and Benefits:

  • £29,000 – £32,000 depending on experience + overtime.
