The Opportunity

We're looking for an Associate Software Engineer to join our Digital Solutions team, where you'll design, develop and support AWS-based APIs that power our B2B EDI solutions. This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer at the beginning of their career who enjoys solving technical challenges, working across the full software development lifecycle, and contributing to scalable, resilient solutions in a collaborative environment.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Working in a team to develop API microservices and frontend experiences that are high scale, fault tolerant, and low latency.
  • Building APIs and event-driven architectures that are database reliant.
  • Owning the entire software life cycle: design, build, and operate.
  • Using modern software development techniques: preferring small releases over big bangs; owning the deployment straight through to production; and performing frequent, iterative releases.
  • Improving how the team works: building upon and improving our tool chain; improving our understanding of the best way of doing things; and communicating positively and working as a team.
  • Working with modern cloud technology: AWS serverless technologies (e.g. Lambda, API Gateway, SNS, SQS, DynamoDB); Docker; Kong; Datadog; Vault; Terraform; and Gitlab.

What You'll Bring

  • Either 1 year experience creating and maintaining Java based services, or a relevant software development qualification.
  • Mature approach to testing (e.g. unit tests, integration tests, security auditing).
  • Working with multiple HTTP based services.
  • Can do mindset that positively impacts on the team.
  • Ability to problem solve at the code and platform level.
  • Work with non-technical team members to turn project briefs into actionable programmes of work.
  • Easy to get on with, good communicator.
  • Working with eventual consistency.
  • Working with relational and non-relational databases.
  • Improving existing services and ways of working.
  • Cloud computing experience.
  • Continuous integration experience (git based, writing CI scripts).

How to prepare for a job interview at Rsgroup

Brush Up on Your Coding Skills

For a full-time software engineering role, it's crucial that we stay sharp with our coding abilities. Expect technical questions that might involve solving problems on the spot or discussing algorithms. Practise on platforms like LeetCode or HackerRank to get comfortable with the types of questions that often come up.

Know Your Tools and Frameworks

Make sure we’re well-acquainted with the tools and technologies listed in the job description. Familiarise ourselves with any specific frameworks or programming languages mentioned. If Rsgroup uses React or Node.js, for instance, be ready to discuss how we’ve used them in previous projects or coursework.

Showcase Your Projects

Bring along a portfolio that highlights our best work. This could be code samples, GitHub repositories, or any side projects we’ve built. Make sure we can talk through our thought process for each project, especially the challenges we faced and how we solved them—this shows our problem-solving skills in action.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

While technical skills are key, full-time positions also require cultural fit. Be ready to discuss our previous experiences and how we handle teamwork, conflict, and deadlines. Brush up on the STAR method—Situation, Task, Action, Result—to clearly articulate our past experiences when discussing how we've contributed to a team.
