You will deliver quality-assured geospatial data for underground utility mapping, drainage and ancillary surveys across the UK & Ireland. This predominantly field-based role combines supervised and unsupervised work, using electromagnetic locators, ground-penetrating radar and GNSS to capture and post-process data for projects typically ranging from small local commissions to multi-site contracts. You will operate within project teams of 3–8 survey professionals, report to Senior Surveyors or Survey Managers, and contribute to projects with values commonly between £10k and £200k. Daily activities include site mobilisation, risk-assessed data capture, client engagement, post-processing in AutoCAD, and delivery of GIS-ready outputs to specification and PAS 128 standards.
In the short term you will confidently produce accurate field data, learn project procedures and support timely delivery. Over the medium term you will take ownership of projects, mentor junior colleagues and broaden technical skills. Long term, this role offers a clear development pathway to Senior Surveyor and Survey Manager roles, supported by recognised industry qualifications and structured training. You will work on significant infrastructure and development projects where reliable utility information reduces risk, saves cost and improves site safety.
Core Capabilities Required For Success
- Proven competence in below-ground utility detection, GPR and EM equipment use, and delivering PAS 128-compliant data from capture to post-processing.
- Skilled in AutoCAD, GIS or similar, with the ability to compile clear, client-ready reports and deliverables.
- Demonstrable application of safe systems of work, site risk assessment, and escalation of H&S or commercial risks.
- Strong verbal and written communication; ability to liaise with clients, the public and multidisciplinary teams.
- Methodical, adaptable approach to field challenges; able to resolve issues and meet time, cost and scope requirements.
Qualifications And Training
- Expected: HNC/Diploma in Surveying or QCF Level 3 in Utility Mapping, minimum 2 years utility surveying experience, PAS 128 knowledge, full UK driving licence.
- Desirable: formal GPR/EM training certificates, wider CAD/GIS qualifications and IOSH or equivalent safety training.
Work patterns & locations
Midlands-based with regular UK&I travel. Predominantly field work with office days for processing. This is a 40hr per week, Monday to Friday role, with paid travel time and half day Fridays. The role is remote, but the workload is predominantly based around South Wales, The Midlands and The North West.
