This is an exciting opportunity for a technically proficient and forward‑thinking mechanical engineer to take a leading role in the delivery of building services design across a diverse and dynamic portfolio. As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be part of a multidisciplinary consultancy environment, working on projects that span energy, infrastructure, healthcare, education, commercial and transportation. If you’re passionate about low‑carbon design, technical excellence, and mentoring others, this is your chance to make a meaningful impact and help shape the future of mechanical engineering at RPS Tetra Tech.
Purpose & Scope of the Role
We are looking for an experienced mechanical engineer to lead the design and delivery of HVAC systems, domestic water services, and above‑ground drainage across a range of new‑build and refurbishment projects. You will produce specifications, condition survey reports, and technical documentation, while engaging regularly with clients and colleagues across engineering, architecture, and planning disciplines. This role offers a blend of technical leadership, stakeholder engagement, and project management, with a strong focus on supporting the transition to a low‑carbon economy through decarbonisation and grid upgrade initiatives. You will also play a key role in the growth of our national Building Services team.
Mechanical Building Services Experience
You will bring substantial experience in the design and delivery of mechanical building services across sectors such as energy, infrastructure, healthcare, education, commercial and transportation. Your expertise will include HVAC systems, domestic water services, and drainage, with a strong understanding of low‑carbon technologies and sustainable design principles. Familiarity with CIBSE guidance, Part L and BREEAM is essential, and you will apply this knowledge to ensure efficient, compliant, and client‑focused solutions.
Technical Knowledge and Peer Engagement
This role requires a technically credible engineer who can contribute confidently to interdisciplinary design meetings and peer‑to‑peer technical discussions. You will be comfortable challenging briefs, proposing innovative alternatives, and articulating complex engineering concepts clearly. Proficiency in design software such as AMTEC Dialux / Relux, AutoCAD, Navisworks and MS Excel is essential, with Revit and IES experience preferable. Your ability to produce accurate models, calculations, and simulations will support informed decision‑making and integration with other disciplines.
Design Experience and Delivery
You will be responsible for producing and reviewing detailed mechanical designs, including spatial planning, thermal calculations and system coordination. You will oversee drawing production, manage design quality, and ensure that outputs meet client expectations. As a senior member of the team, you will mentor junior engineers, support the development of best practice and contribute to the continuous improvement of design standards across the business.
Technical and Engineering Problem Solving
You will apply engineering judgement to solve complex challenges, particularly in refurbishment and remodel projects where constraints are more demanding. Drawing on your experience, you will identify practical solutions, improve design efficiency and propose greener, more sustainable alternatives. Your ability to think critically and creatively will be key to success, as you challenge conventional approaches and demonstrate how alternative solutions can deliver better outcomes for clients and the environment.
Project Management Responsibilities
You will play a central role in managing the delivery of mechanical building services projects, including responsibility for budgets, programme timelines and quality assurance. You will plan and prioritise workloads across multiple concurrent projects, coordinate resources and ensure that all deliverables meet agreed standards and deadlines. Your ability to manage client expectations, track progress and maintain financial control will be essential, particularly on larger or more complex schemes.
Training, Qualifications & Experience
You will hold a degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering or have significant equivalent work experience supported with BTEC qualifications. Chartered Engineer status, or working towards chartership with IET or CIBSE, is highly desirable. You will have strong knowledge of industry standards and regulations and hands‑on experience with design software including Hevacomp, MagiCAD, AutoCAD, Navisworks and MS Excel is essential, with Revit and IES experience preferable.
