You’ll work under the expert guidance of doctors in medical centres, or in the difficult working conditions of frontline bases.
Royal Army Medical Service
The Royal Army Medical Service (RAMS) is responsible for maintaining the health of servicemen and women. The Corps is represented wherever British Soldiers are deployed, providing medical support to operations, exercises and Adventurous Training expeditions all over the world.

- Help with medical evacuations in hostile conditions.
Responsibilities
- Provide emergency medical care to soldiers and civilians in a range of locations.
- Work under the guidance of doctors in medical centres.
- Operate in frontline bases and adapt to difficult conditions.
- Support medical evacuations and casualty removal as quickly and safely as possible.
Qualifications
Minimum of GCSE Grade A* – C/9‑4, or Scottish equivalent, in at least English Language and Maths.
Training Steps
- Step 1: Basic military training teaches you how to be a soldier. This covers everything from fieldcraft to how to handle a rifle.
- Step 2: You’ll then learn how to be a Combat Medical Technician at the Defence School of Healthcare Training, Litchfield, during trade training. This takes 22 weeks. When you finish, you’ll be a Class 2 Combat Medical Technician, with a level 3 Diploma and Care Certificate. Trade training includes theory and practical modules, as well as clinical placements in Defence Primary Healthcare medical centres.
Qualifications after Training
Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare Support upon completion of the apprenticeship, awarded by City and Guilds. You'll earn £25,200 a year from the start of your training, which will go up as you progress throughout your career.
