The Vehicle Mechanic maintains and repairs all Army vehicles, from tanks to heavy goods vehicles, ensuring operational readiness for deployments and daily duties.

Responsibilities

  • Keep Army vehicles operational at home and in operational theatres.
  • Service and maintain a wide range of vehicle types, including tanks, trucks, quads, and HGVs.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and carry out detailed inspections.
  • Assist with roadworthiness testing of all Army vehicles.
  • Follow Army vehicle maintenance policy and all health and safety guidelines.

Qualifications & Training

  • Age: 16 – 36 years (must be 15 years 7 months to 35 years 6 months at application).
  • GCSE Grade A*–C/9–4 in English, Science and Maths (or Scottish equivalent).
  • Fitness requirements – Mid Thigh Pull 50 kg, Medicine Ball Throw 3 m (Army Reserve 2.7 m).
  • Complete basic military training and subsequent technical training at the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.
  • Career Development
  • Earn Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Servicing and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship.
  • Pursue Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Engineering.
  • Acquire leadership and management qualifications at various levels.
  • Obtain car and HGV licences, with opportunities for tracked vehicle and plant licences.
  • Start salary of £27,282 per annum, with progression available throughout the career.
