The Vehicle Mechanic maintains and repairs all Army vehicles, from tanks to heavy goods vehicles, ensuring operational readiness for deployments and daily duties.
Responsibilities
- Keep Army vehicles operational at home and in operational theatres.
- Service and maintain a wide range of vehicle types, including tanks, trucks, quads, and HGVs.
- Perform preventive maintenance and carry out detailed inspections.
- Assist with roadworthiness testing of all Army vehicles.
- Follow Army vehicle maintenance policy and all health and safety guidelines.
Qualifications & Training
- Age: 16 – 36 years (must be 15 years 7 months to 35 years 6 months at application).
- GCSE Grade A*–C/9–4 in English, Science and Maths (or Scottish equivalent).
- Fitness requirements – Mid Thigh Pull 50 kg, Medicine Ball Throw 3 m (Army Reserve 2.7 m).
- Complete basic military training and subsequent technical training at the Defence School of Electronic and Mechanical Engineering.
- Career Development
- Earn Level 3 Heavy Vehicle Servicing and Maintenance Technician Apprenticeship.
- Pursue Level 5 Higher National Diploma in Engineering.
- Acquire leadership and management qualifications at various levels.
- Obtain car and HGV licences, with opportunities for tracked vehicle and plant licences.
- Start salary of £27,282 per annum, with progression available throughout the career.
